"The most beautiful relationship in this world starts with friendship."
-TheDiaryOfLife
Sunlight streams through the window, illuminating a sea of cardboard boxes. I stretch, taking a deep breath of fresh, unfamiliar air, and glances at Aidan, my best friend, who's already wrestling with a box in the corner.
"Ready to turn this place into a home?" Aidan asks with a grin.
"I need music for this." I said looking at the mountain of packing boxes stacked in my living room.
It's been a while now that I've been looking for an apartment. I found one three days ago and I straight off moved my stuff to the house I can finally call home.
I forced Aidan, my best friend, to come help me unpack. He would have come if I didn't go and brought him myself.
Aiden and I have been best friends since we were in diapers. Our mothers said that we were joined at the hip. We have been together at our lowest more than our highest.
"Aidan, can you hold this for me, please?" I asked for help, trying to hold the heavy box in my hand.
"Sure, here," Aidan says, taking the box from my outstretched arms. A faint scent of lavender soap and sunshine hits me, a familiar fragrance that's been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember.
"Thanks," I say, a strand of hair falling loose from my braid. I watch, mesmerized, as he tucks it behind my ear, the gesture oddly intimate. Maybe it's because I've never quite seen him in this light before.
I blush a little then turn around. I push the thought into the back of my mind. I put both of my arms on my waist. And look at how far we have finished.
Leaning casually against a half-unpacked box, I survey the room. "Wow, we've made a lot of progress! Almost there."
Aidan helps me unpack by opening the box. I was putting books on the shelf when I heard Aidan clearing his throat.
"Hmmm... Soph, where do I put this?"
I turn around to find Aiden rubbing the back of his neck with his hand and holding a bra with the other hand. I turn red in embarrassment. I run and take the bra and the whole box from him.
"You were not supposed to see that." I said while looking away.
A hint of amusement dances in Aidan's eyes. "Was I supposed to see something else instead?" he teases, the playful glint in his gaze making my cheeks burn even hotter.
"N-No," I stutter, shoving the box onto a shelf a little too forcefully. It lands with a thump, a few stray socks tumbling out. You quickly gather them up, avoiding Aidan's gaze.
"This is embarrassing." I mumbled. Aidan came near me holding my hands that covered my face.
"No. It's not embarrassing," Aidan says softly, his voice rumbling close behind me. I can feel the warmth of his breath tickle your ear, sending shivers down my spine. His touch on my hands is gentle, hesitant, yet it makes my heart skip a beat.
I slowly lift my head, meeting Aidan's gaze. The air crackles with a sudden tension, charged with unspoken emotions. His eyes, usually filled with friendly amusement, now hold a depth I've never noticed before.
I murmur his name, "Aidan," the sound barely a whisper. His breath catches in his throat, a single exhale escaping his lips, "Hmm?" as he leans in closer, the space between us shrinking with each passing moment. The playful atmosphere that once filled the room has given way to a charged anticipation, leaving us both breathless and unsure of what will happen next.
Aiden leans in, his face hovering just inches from mine. The air between us crackles with unspoken tension. His hand reaches up, gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing against my skin. His voice is a husky murmur as he asks, "Can I kiss you?"
I nod, unable to tear my gaze away from his. The touch of his hand on my cheek sends a jolt through me. He leans in slowly, closing the distance between us. The first brush of his lips against mine is electric, sending a wave of shivers down my spine.
The kiss begins hesitantly, a soft exploration that quickly ignites into something more passionate. We lose ourselves in the moment, the world around us fading away. Finally, we break apart, breathless and cheeks flushed. Our eyes meet, sparkling with a newfound emotion that leaves us both speechless.
Aiden murmurs my name, "Sophie," his voice husky. He gently lifts my chin, tilting my face up towards his. His gaze searches mine, his eyes filled with a question I can't quite decipher. The air hangs heavy with unspoken emotions, and I wait with a bated breath, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Sophie, can we be more than just friends?" He asked.
Aidan's question hangs in the air, a culmination of the unspoken feelings that have come to light during our unpacking session. His gaze is intense, searching my eyes for an answer.
A shy smile spreads across my face as I nod in agreement. The unspoken feelings I've harbored for Aidan for so long are finally out in the open, and the future feels full of exciting possibilities.
Aidan's eyes light up with joy, a mirrored reflection of the warmth blooming in my chest. He leans in once more, this time for a kiss that conveys everything left unsaid. His hand finds mine, intertwining our fingers as we embrace.
In that moment, the boxes around us fade into insignificance. All that matters is the newfound connection between Aidan and I, a bond blossoming from the journey of our lifelong friendship.
The air around us feels lighter, somehow charged with new electricity. Glancing around the room, I realize we're both surrounded by half-unpacked boxes, a testament to the interruption.
A grin spreads across my face. "Well," I say, nudging him playfully with my elbow, "guess unpacking can wait. How about we celebrate?"
