Darwin waited in the batcave until his younger brother returned from patrol. In the meantime, he was cleaning the glass windows, behind which were the former costumes of the Bat-family. Darwin's gaze lingered longer on the display case containing Batman's first outfit.
When Bruce started to wear it, he came back all battered. Darwin and Alfred had to bandage him up and then help him with the usual necessities of life like eating or brushing his teeth.
At that time, Darwin also wore that costume for the first time. All because Bruce begged him for help. After all, Batman couldn't show that one night's beating had made him give up.
Darwin sighed when he noticed the annoying stain on the expensive glass. He had been feeling tired since this morning, but he couldn't lie down and rest. His brother needed him. And Darwin wanted to do everything possible to support Bruce.
How many years had it been since they had been left alone? Over 30 since their parents died. And... three since Alfred had been killed.
At the mere mention, Darwin felt his dinner rise in his throat.
"I have to sit down..." he thought as his head began to spin.
The man sat down in front of the bat-computer and, out of the corner of his eye, noticed the camera log on the screen. Bruce was back.
The Batmobile pulled into its spot, and Darwin felt even worse at the prospect of having to wash the car.
Bruce threw the mask on the table. He started to strip off his disguise as Darwin struggled to get up to greet him.
"How was it?" The man asked, handing his brother his tracksuit bottoms.
"As usual. A few bruises and abrasions. One got away from me. I'm getting slow..."
"That's normal at your age," laughed Darwin, even though he himself was already over 50. "Any wounds that need my help?"
"No. You can take care of yourself," was the response.
Darwin knew that Bruce had meant no harm. Nevertheless, he felt an unpleasant pain. He didn't know what he could do other than help his family. He did not like to sit for nothing.
The man nodded and had already started walking towards the stairs when the pain in his chest increased sharply. It was no longer a metaphor, it was reality.
Darwin groped for his heart and clenched his eyes together tightly. A sound of discomfort escaped his lips, catching Bruce's attention.
"Are... Are you all right?" Batman stepped closer.
"Yes... It's just... " Darwin felt the words coming with difficulty. "It'll pass..."
The younger man immediately sensed the amount of strength his brother had invested in saying this. He grabbed Darwin under the arm and began to lead him towards the car.
"I'm taking you to hospital. You might have a heart attack," he said quickly, putting his brother in the passenger seat. He himself quickly ran to the other side of the vehicle and sat behind the wheel.
"No... Impossible... I'm too young, I'll get over it soon..." the man was gasping for breath due to the difficulty in breathing.
"Darwin, you are 53 years old!" With these words, Bruce took off, and only dust remained behind them.
The elder Wayne's condition was worsening. He was clutching his chest in desperation, as if that would help.
Sporadically, Bruce looked in his direction, and his fright and worry grew.
"Just a little more... Hold on, please..." he whispered, but got no response.
