Chapter 3
Jess Conner woke up the next day feeling weak, she didn't have a very good night sleep all her mind has been troubled by the event of the previous day and she has to wake up early this morning to arrange the house and prepare food for Laura in order to finish on time before Ryan's driver gets there. All she could think of was how this day was going to go by without having any issue with her boss" Ryan". Today was her first day she just needed to finish this job without any problems. She needed the money so she was going to do a perfect job and avoid Ryan at all courses. If only she has money to pay him but she doesn't even have money to pay for the rent, at first she had tried to take a loan from a bank but she has been rejected because she was jobless at the time, she also tried to borrow money from a loan shark, but those people looked at how it's lust, implicating that they needed something ambiguous in return.
At about 11:00 a.m. everything was ready, Joan came in 10 minutes later, and it took her roughly 30 minutes to bathe and get dressed, she didn't have makeup on just some lip gloss and liner. " I have just 20 minutes more before the driver gets here" Jess said as she entered the sitting room.
" You look good for someone going to cook" Jess said jokingly
"Well I still need to look professional as you said, and I will be going shopping because the last time I checked my closet, it does not have clothes fit for a personal assistant " Jess said. Twenty minutes later the door bell rang.
" That must be the driver" Joan said
" Talk about professional he is right on time" Jess said " Laura is sleeping upstairs she has already had breakfast so when she wakes up, you give her lunch, is in the microwave I will be back before dinner" Jess said looking around, Joan pushed her to the door "I got this you don't have to worry about us, just worry about you and your boss" Joan said sarcastically. Jess opened the door to meet a man in his mid 40s standing in the doorway.
" Miss Conner am Eric, master Ryan's driver, I was asked to pick you up" The driver said.
" Yes, good day sir " Jess greeted.
" Please call me Eric" the man corrected.
" Okay Eric, we can go now am ready " Eric opened the door for her " please you don't have to open the door for me next time, I can do that" she said as she entered the car.
The drive to the beach house was quiet and long, nervousness was creeping into her every now and then that she had to lower the window for fresh air. When they got closer to the house Jess noticed that it was the beach house, she have been there before in the past when she and Ryan will come over to spend their weekends or whenever they wants to be alone, this is where they shared most of their love and memories together and she knows the house very well, every rooms, every corner of the house was imprinted in her memory. He should have just told her it was the beach house when she asked for his actress yesterday, and she could have just located the place with ease and not stress the driver, maybe he just wanted to keep it professional she thought.
As soon as butler heard the sound of the car stopped, he came outside to welcome the new cook and to show her around, but was shocked when he saw Jess, " Miss Jessica what.... you are here", the butler Mr Quinn an elderly man in his 50s who has been working at the beach house for over 20 years for the Gibson's family. He was surprised to see Jessica Marshall at the beach house after ten years " are you here to see the young master? " He asked
" Good day Mr Quinn, please call me Jess, and I am the young master's new personal assistant, and I will be serving as the Cook until they cook comes back" Jess said bitterly.
Mr Quinn smiled because he understood the young Master's play he had known him since his childhood and he knows how much he loved miss Jessica Marshall and how he was hurt and the pain he passed through when she broke up with him because he had come to the beach house to spend some time after the breakup before leaving the country." Ohh you are the Miss Conner, we been expecting you, please come inside" he said leading the way " The young master is in the study".
" Alright I'll go meet him to let him know that I am here and to ask what I should be making for him" Jess said.
" Everything you need is in the kitchen the Cook makes sure to stock the house before leaving, but let me know if you need anything more"
" Thank you Mr Quinn, I will let you know if I can't find anything " with that he led her to the study.
Ryan who was reading some documents when he had a knock on the door " come in " after a few seconds as Mr Quinn walked in
" Sir miss Jessica is here" he said,
" Okay" he replied and continued with his reading.
" You can go in now miss Jessica " he told Jess
" Mr Quinn please call me Jess " she said and walked into the study to find Ryan staring at her coldly " good day sir" she greeted in a sarcastic tone.
" Good day miss Conner " he replied still sounding coldly to her.
" What do I make for lunch for you sir" she asked,
" Hmmm I don't know, impress me" he answered standing up and walked towards the window showing a view of his gorgeous ripped abs underneath his shirt. He turns his back on her showing off his amazingly broad shoulders.
Impress him? What can I possibly cook to impress this version of Ryan she is just getting to know, Jess thought to herself " okay sir " she said still looking at him. He has changed. He was handsome before, but he is even more attractive now with his grey shirt unable to hide his fantastic chest.... She stared into his beautiful blue eyes forgetting why she was there.
" When you are done staring, you can leave" Ryan said bringing Jess back.
" Yes sir" Jess replied shaking her head as though she just remembered herself and quietly left the study feeling embarrassed.
Ryan smiled, feeling happy knowing that he still has some effects on her. This was just the beginning of his plans.
After about 30 minutes there was another knock on the door " come in " Ryan said, it was Jess who had come to inform him that his lunch was ready " bring it up here, I will eat here" he said. When the food was brought he opened it and all he said was " No".
" No?" Jess repeated
" I can't eat this " Ryan said
" But I asked what you wanted"
" And I said you should impress me and by the look of this I am not impressed at all".
The frustration in Jess was so visible that by looking at her face you can tell, but she calmed herself down and said "okay sir what will you like to eat"
" Impress me " he said once again.
Jess took the tray angrily and left the study to make another food.
After about two more tries and Ryan rejecting the food Jess was already fuming in anger and decided that if he rejects this one, she was done. After placing the food on the table, Ryan looked at her and noticed she was already exhausted and angry enough to burn the whole house down and finally said " now am impressed" with a smile on his face. Jess was about to leave the study when she heard "sit". She turned back at him" what?" she said.
" I said sit down" Ryan repeated.
" Why" Jess asked looking confused
" Watch me eat"
" Sir please I have many other things I'd rather be doing and I need to go get some few things at the mall before going home to take care of my daughter" Jess said reminding him that she still has a daughter at home not looking pleased with him.
" Oh if that the case" he said opening the table side drawer and brought out two cards "take this and get yourself some new office clothes, I don't want my assistant looking like an ordinary worker, and the other card is the office elevator card, the secretary said you forgot to pick it up yesterday while leaving"
" Oh thank you and I can get myself new clothes "
"Am not doing it for you, it only comes with the job" he lied " so take the damn card and leave "
Jess took the cards and was about to leave when she heard "see you on Monday morning with my coffee, black, with little sugar, and don't be late"
" See you on Monday " Jess said walking out of the study.
She went back to the kitchen to arrange some food in the fridge for the next few days for Ryan and told mr Quinn how everything is being placed before setting to leave the house. She got to the door only to find the driver waiting for her "Mr Eric please I can find my way no need to disturb yourself, thank you"
" Miss Conner I was instructed to take you wherever you are going to and take you back home, so you are not disturbing me, I'm just doing my job" he said happily.
When Jess got home she met Joan and Laura watching a program at the sitting room " mommy mommy" Laura shouted as she ran to hug her mother " how is my baby girl doing" she said hugging her and handed a bag to her.
"Is this for me?" She asked collecting the bag from Jess and happily running upstairs to her room to check out the new clothes her mum got her.
" How was your first day at work" Joan asked,
" I almost killed someone today, God Joan I don't know how I am going to cope for the next 6 months working with Ryan as my boss, he is so annoying " Jess complained
"What happened "
"Can you believe that Ryan made me cook five different foods just to piss me off saying that the food didn't impress him"
" Wow, and? " Joan asked expecting to hear more as she saw a black card on the table.
"And what, nothing, okay he gave me his card to get some new office clothes, saying he doesn't want his assistant looking like an ordinary worker, and when I refuse, he said it wasn't for me that it comes with the job"
" And you believed him, are u sure that, that guy doesn't still have feelings for you?"
" Nooo! Feelings? If anything the only feeling he has for me is hatred and anger"
"You can't be so sure about that, there are so many different ways people express their love or their feelings for someone" Joan said taking her bag to leave.
"Are you not going to have dinner with us?" Jess asked,
" Oh we already had dinner, yours is in the microwave, I got to go pick up some drugs for my mom before the pharmacy store close to my house closes"
" Okay dear, thank you so much, and greet your mum for me, I will come one of these days to visit her"
"She will hear" Joan said and left the house. Jess collapsed on one of the chairs in the sitting room feeling very tired and exhausted."she just hoped to finish this job without killing someone she thought. The only exciting thing about the job was the new clothes she got and the pay.
