Lili and Harry held hands, the castle eerily quiet around them.
There were no more words to be said between them. They had argued and fought and wept, and now there was nothing more to do. He knew that she had to be the one to deliver him, in fulfillment of the Prophecy. She had begged and cried that he would not ask her to do it, not be the one to walk him to his death.
But already she knew: it was the only way.
Neither would live, neither could survive. The only thing left to do was let Lili guide Harry into Death's welcoming arms. They would do this as they had done everything else. Together, always.
The staircases were no longer moving. The portraits they passed were empty. The ghosts were weeping quietly in the rafters. Hand—in—hand, as they reached the end of the corridor, they turned towards the final staircase and briefly froze. In the shadows of the landing, Hermione huddled close to Ron, her head upon his shoulder, their faces close, hands holding tight.
Then, as if sensing their presence, Hermione turned.
Lili's best friend gasped and jolted to her feet, rushing to meet them. Her voice hoarse through her demand of, "Where've you two been?!"
Softer, but no less worried, Ron said, "We thought you'd both gone to the Forest, we thought you might be—,"
"We're going there now," Harry replied dully.
Despite herself, despite her resolve, a sob hitched somewhere in Lili's throat.
"Are you two mad?!" Ron cried, "No!"
Lili's arms wrapped tight round her body, ducking her head, tears spilling onto her dirty jumper.
"It's... meant to be."
"Rubbish! Tell him, Lili!" Ron turned to her desperately, "Tell him it's rubbish! You won't just give him up to Riddle, you won't—,"
Hermione squeezed Ron's arm, silencing him. She glanced between the two pale faces before her. "What is it? What is it you both know?"
Harry glanced at Lili who rubbed her cheek against shoulder, nodding just a little, as if giving permission, as if assuring him.
"There's a reason I can hear them — the Horcruxes."
Lili closed her eyes at the sight of Hermione shaking her head over and over, refusing the truth, not wanting to believe.
"I think I've known for a while." Harry simply nodded and touched the center of his chest, studying their friend. "And I think you have too."
