"Walk into the lake, the water is fine." They whisper in my ear.
So I dip my toes into the cool water.
It feels refreshing and cold against the warm, humid day. "Further, further!" They say. I walk calmly into the water, feeling the small round pebbles press gently into the soles of my feet. I stop when the water reaches my knees, shivering from the cold. Confused, I look up and see fierce looking gray clouds choke out the sun, and a few water droplets land on my face and slowly make their way down to my chin where they fall to water below. The world becomes gloomy and dark. All signs of warmth and safety have left like a fish being swept downstream by a violent current. A gentle breeze brings the words, "Further, further..." and a shiver rolls down my spine as I comply with the seemingly harmless demands. The water no longer feels refreshing on my body, it feels so cold that it's burning my skin. It hits like a tidal wave that this is a terrible idea; alas I am up to my neck in this scorching water. A scream erupts from my throat as I frantically try to swim to shore but the water has turned into a frothy hell. Wind howls in my ears while the rain drops are pelting my face, and my body is numb with the cold. I can no longer feel anything. I hear a voice echo through my head and snicker, "You fool." Those words seem to be a trigger on some sick gun, because I start to fall very slowly. It's agonizing, I feel the water enter my nostrils, burning me, as I'm forced to breathe it in and my eyes sting as the ice cold water caresses them forcefully. Once again I try to scream, but it is muffled by the water and in a matter of seconds, my head is under. I'm choking and stunned, because I never wanted to go out like this. I lie on my back while looking up to the surface and what I see brings me to tears...it was never raining, the water is still, the sun is out, there was nobody with me, it's calm and peaceful. These were my own intentions and I never knew. I close my eyes and let my body fall, fall, fall, until I faintly feel the dirt and stones at the bottom of the lake. I painfully smile a final time and tearfully look up at the sun, it's bright rays so brilliant and beautiful reflected in the dark blue lake. I remember everything now.
