- Zak -

"There! There- I see them!"

Zak ran as fast as he could with Ace at his side. Riley followed close behind while several others laid down cover fire with everything they had.

Every gun.

Every bullet.

Everything they had.

They can't have him.

He saw the shapes of men breaking for the trees. "Run them down! Don't let them get away!!"

Zak stumbled to a stop. His head was spinning. "He's there!"

Ace ran past him.

Zero, was dead.

He was laid in a slump over Kasper. Zero's neck, or what was left of it had nearly been severed just under his chin. Ace threw him off and pulled at Kasper. Frantically tossing the blanket he had brought over him to keep out the sun. He watched Ace shake Kasper's face. Feel at his chest, and shake him again.

"Ace?" Zak whispered and took a step. "ACE?" He nearly fell forward.

This isn't how it goes.

He couldn't look.

If he didn't look it wasn't true.

It wasn't happening.

Ace shook Kasper's battered body and pulled at his eyelids.

He pulled Zero's arm free from Kasper's mouth before dragging Kasper toward Zak, his wings beating frantically. Wherever Zero's blood had touched him, Kasper's skin was already breaking apart.

ZAK-

Someone shook him.

"ZAK- There's still a chance, he's still breathing- here."

His hands slipped in all the blood.

There's so much-

His fingers caught on dirt matted hair.

There's no chance-

His heart pounded when he lifted the weight of him.

"Hang on," Ace said to Kasper. Or what little remained of him. He was sheet white. Blood gathered in the hollow of his chest, quivering around broken bone like trapped fish in a drying pool. "Adam won't let him die. It will keep him alive- it's gonna keep him alive."

Zak stumbled, again and again, as they ran back toward camp. Behind them, those who stayed emptied every last magazine they had.

Time sped back into the present.

Riley joined them at the entrance and shoved the gate open.

"Oh my God-" Her face flushed and she took a step back. "He didn't make it." She moved into Zak's place while he shifted lower, taking hold beneath what remained of Kasper's leg. They hoisted him through the camp, towards the barracks, and into their building; down the hall, leaving bloody spatters as they went, and into the kitchen. Riley kicked away the glass and helped lower him onto the table. "What do we do?!?" She ran about, gathering up all the towels and cloth scraps she could.

What can I do?

"I don't know- Just- let me think." Ace was shaking. "I- I- I need to think. Get cups- buckets- Don't soak up the blood- what did they hit him with?"

"I don't know." Zak was sliding. "Explosives. Some kind of explosive."

"I'll get the trauma kit."

"He isn't healing." Zak knew it.
