In another room, Marcus whistled so loudly that Regina closed her ears. Darius and Kos both jumped from their beds on full alert.
Darius glanced at them and said, "Hey, she's still here."
"Not because of you," she said, smirking, "If I wanted, I would be very far away right now."
Marcus was not surprised to hear that she was thinking about running away from them, but what made him more curious, was why she hadn't contacted someone to help her deal with them. Or maybe she did, and they were waiting for the right moment to take them. Despite her words about almost believing him, he needed to stay on full alert. As he saw earlier, with her, you would never know what she was thinking and what she would do next. She still could play along to humor him and could bitterly surprise them in the end.
"Get ready, we need to go. We'll wait for you in the car," Marcus took what was left in a grocery bag and went outside to eat while waiting.
When the two of them were standing at the car, Regina asked, "Tell me about your intel, why do you think my sister was adopted?"
Wow. He'd really thought she'd ask that sooner.
"Regina, I'm very sorry that I broke such news in such an inconsiderate manner. I thought that you knew. Our intel is a small group of people, who knows about our history since we started the colonization. We communicate with them frequently, and when we were planning this trip and decided to meet with the President, they made an investigation and found out that your father is a good friend of the President. Later, when we were investigating him, we learned about your sister, Clare."
"And why did you choose my father in the first place?"
"We needed to know, who was the best person with whom we can make the first contact on Earth. We researched different people and stopped on him because he'd made a great impact in your country as a Senator. Your people love him, and he seemed like the best candidate. We found out about Clare's adoption by accident—because it was classified before—but suddenly this info appeared on our radar, and this info solidified our intention of contacting him."
"Why so?" she pursed her lips, studying him carefully.
"Because it means that he truly cares not only about himself, but about others too, and it's not just an appearance."
He could still remember that day a couple of months ago when he'd got this intel. He even choked in sympathy when he saw it. If he was brave enough to adopt and save an infant, he cared about others. And he would understand Marsikon's situation and help them save their home.
She exhaled, "I see. I just... Sorry if I don't believe you about this at once. I need to talk with him about it."
"Did you call him?" he asked.
"No, not yet. I'll call him when we are in DC. This isn't a phone conversation," she pinched her lips, and looked away.
She was quiet for a bit. And he just looked at her, trying to read her thoughts. But it was hard with her. He never knew what was going to come next from her mouth, as it was back in the room when she jumped from topic to topic. Or it was her strategy to confuse him and gain something from him, what he didn't want to share. She was holding him on his tiptoes, and he must be careful with that sharp mind of hers.
She glanced back at him, and again surprised him, by asking, "If you have people here, who knows about Marsikons, why didn't they contact the President? Or why you didn't go them in the first place after your arrival?"
"Believe me, they've tried, but then they were threatened to be sent into an asylum. One of them was sent to Area 51 and was released only after a couple of months. In the end, he denied everything that he'd told in the beginning, or he would be locked up for the rest of his life. Nobody would listen to them. So, we thought to go straight to the President by ourselves and tell and show everything we know. But we decided it wouldn't be a good start if we go directly to the President. We needed to find a person, who cares about people, who swore to protect them, and who had contact with the President. And we've found that person. It's you."
She was flattered at how he described her. But she was scrutinizing him with her hard gaze. Any lesser man would start to fidget or something, but he remained stoic because he was sincere.
"Okay, I hear you. I'll try to help you, as much as I can." One corner of her mouth lifted in a smile, and his inside warmed. He caught himself thinking, that he liked her when she smiled. She was indeed a gorgeous woman.
"So, little sister, you're with us for a long-haul. Nice to know," Darius said when he came out of the room.
The familiarity between them made Marcus clench his teeth. He left them only for a couple of hours, and they were acting like best friends now. It also made a nasty feeling resonate within him. Was that jealous of what felt like it? He quickly shook himself, not daring to dwell on this feeling for too long.
Kos came next and only smirked glancing at their trio. Regina slapped Darius' hand and said, "Brother, behave." But he could see the laughter in her eyes.
She moved to the driver's door, and he and others tensed.
"Relax boys, now without any tricks," she chuckled and got in.
The tension was released, and Marcus opened his sandwich on the passenger's seat, which he hadn't eaten before.
It was almost in his mouth when he heard Regina telling him through gritted teeth, "One crumb on the upholstery and you're walking behind the car."
Her tone would be menacing if not for the fact that she was moving her seat all the way to the steering wheel after he'd pushed it all the way back to accommodate his legs. A long way in a long time with a little zipping sound. He almost choked on his sandwich but contained himself from laughing.
Darius in the back seat was not containing himself and laughed openly. And even Kos barked a bear laugh.
Regina showed them the middle finger, and they laughed even harder.
Marcus was smiling, feeling that everything was going to be fine now.
