I take a deep breath as I walk into heaven, and by heaven, I mean my favourite used book store. The distinct scent of books wafts over to me as I greet the owner of the store. "Sam, back again I see," Gina says with a grin. She's in her 40's and is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I smile widely at her in return.

"You can't keep me out of here for too long," I reply as I crouch down. Gina's german shepherd Arya bounds over to me and leans into me while I run my hands through her thick fur. "How's my girl?" I give her a treat that I kept in my pocket for her and scratch her behind an ear.

"I swear she waits all day for you to come," Gina teases. "I wonder if she even enjoys my company anymore." Gina also happens to be my mother's lifelong best friend. You could say she's basically my aunt. I ignore her joke and give her a hug before standing up straight again. "How was work?"

I work at the vet clinic in town as a veterinary technologist, which is basically an animal nurse. "Very hectic!" I exclaim. "We're getting into busy season." I look through the bookmarks on Gina's counter to see if there are any new additions. "Actually, it's always busy season." I chuckle as I pick up a dark wooden bookmark with a red dragon sleeping on it.

"This is one of the cutest things I've ever seen." I show Gina the bookmark. "This dragon reminds me of Thorn from the Inheritance book series!"

"I knew you'd like that one." She gives me a wink as I set it aside on the counter so I can purchase it later.

"Well, you know where I'll be..." Gina nods as I eagerly head towards the back of the store to the fantasy book section. My hands feel like they're itching to grab books.

I'm surprised to find a young man already browsing through my favourite genre. He's tall, definitely taller than me; probably around 6ft. He's so focused on the book he's holding that I don't think he's even noticed me. He's wearing dark jeans and a black leather jacket. I can't see his face because he's turned away from me. It's rude to stare, I tell myself.

"Hello," I say quietly to be polite. My voice comes out a little shaky, my nerves displaying themselves splendidly in front of the stranger. The young man turns slowly as I realize how lame my greeting must have sounded. My eyes happen to catch the book he's holding and I nearly jump out of my skin.

I quickly cover the distance between us with a couple of steps so I can see the book better. "Is that the next book in the Inheritance cycle?!" This time, my voice comes out very confident, my social anxiety melting away when I see the dragon on the front of the book cover. Books have this way of taking me out of my shell so to speak. I suddenly realize that I'm being quite loud and that I'm almost touching the man. I take a step back and blush out of embarrassment. "I am so sorry. I shouldn't have jumped on you like that. It's just that it's my favourite series!" My words come out all jumbled.

"Mine too," the man responds. I finally look up at him and realize that he must be around my age. His bare face is very youthful looking and his eyes are very soft. He looks like he might be Korean and it would make sense with his accent too. He smiles at me as I stare at him speechless.

"Really?! This is so amazing! I've never spoken directly with anyone who has read the books before!" I return his smile with one of my own.

"Me either," he answers readily. "Sorry if my English is not very good." He looks down shyly, clearly upset that his accent comes through when he speaks.

"Don't worry about it!" I say hurriedly. "You sound great! It must be so hard to learn a new language." I mean what I say. The young man struggles a bit with his words but I can understand him clearly. "I've also heard English is a really hard language to learn." I add in that last part to hopefully make him feel better.
