Chapter Five: One Day At A Time

When I get to work, Jade finds me and I let her know how the conversation with Yunho went last night. "Whoa, back up!" she exclaims when I brush over the part where Yunho said it's a date. "He's totally into you!"

"I don't know," I start. "He could just be one of those people who say 'date' to anyone. It could just be an appointment to him."

"Does he really seem like that to you?" Jade asks as she rolls her eyes.

I think about how sincere Yunho is about everything. "No," I answer honestly. Jade gives me a pointed look. "But what if he does like me romantically? What do I do? I've never dated anyone before in my life!" I start to get a little anxious at the prospect.

Jade pats me on the back. "Girl, just focus on getting to know him first," she tells me. "And just be yourself. Do not follow what people say about playing hard to get or other stupid advice. Just be yourself." I nod steadily and give her a smile.

"Thanks Jade," I respond. "You're the best friend a girl could ask for."

"Aww thanks!" Jade gives me a tight hug.

...

After lunch, I hear yelling. I follow the sound of a male's voice up to the front. I stay back to try and get information on what's going on. There's an older man shouting at Faith. "I just want my cat's medication!" he screams.

I take a deep breath and step out front. "Can I help you with anything sir?" I take a look at Faith's face. She looks shaken.

"Yeah, you can get my cat's pills right now," the man demands. I look at the file and read some of the notes. It seems that the cat needs a blood test before getting more medication. And according to the file, we have already given the owners multiple chances to bring their cat in. I explain the situation again to him, even though I'm sure Faith already did. "You're not listening!" The client bangs a fist onto the front desk which causes all of us to jump.

This man could seriously hurt someone. I need to be careful here. "Sir, please calm down. We're trying to help you." I motion to Faith and mouth for her to get help. She gets up and hurries to find one of the owners of the clinic.

"What's she doing?!" the man asks angrily.

"She's just going to get the owner so you can speak with him," I respond as evenly as I can despite my heart racing with fear.

"You're not listening!" the man screams again. He starts to come around the counter and I back up just as our owner Todd; my boss, steps up to the front. My hands grasp the counter that I've backed up to, tightening with my anxiety.

"Sir, you need to stop right now or we will be calling the police," Todd says with authority.

The man falters a bit at the sight of Todd. "I'm not going anywhere without that medication!" The client yells in response. Todd nods to me and I head to the back and call the police.

...

The man gets driven back to his house in a police cruiser and is given a warning. "I hope that's enough to keep him away," I say to Jade. I realize for the first time since the encounter that I'm shaking. Jade hugs me and rubs my arm.

"What an awful man," Jade says. "It's going to be okay." Everyone tries to console Faith and I throughout the rest of the day. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to feel like. I keep thinking that he's going to come back and threaten us more or worse.

"Thanks for having my back," Faith tells me right before it's time to go home. "I didn't know what to do." I can see that she's starting to tear up. I can feel it too but I tamper it down to be strong for her.
