ARA WAS ALREADY DONE WITH HER FATHER, AND SHE HADN'T EVEN FACED HIM YET.
If he hadn't sent his minions to fetch them, they wouldn't have been lost in the woods, with no food, clothes or money. But why not make some kids' life harder than it already was?
"Somewhere up ahead, this turns into a satyr path." Grover spoke up.
"What's a satyr path?" Percy asked.
"It's a road through the wilderness. Satyr explorers use them. Harder to track us."
"That's great, but if we stay in the wilderness, how are we gonna find a phone?"
"What do we need a phone for?" Ara furrowed her eyebrows. "Didn't anyone tell you how dangerous it is for a demigod to be calling someone?"
"Dangerous or not, we need it to contact the camp." Percy said, as if it was obvious. "To get help."
"We don't need help. We're fine." Annabeth said.
"We're fine? We haven't even gotten to Trenton and we're wandering through a forest. I didn't even know we had forests in New Jersey, but we've found one. I would say we're the opposite of fine."
"Again, I don't know how you were expecting this to go, but, since you seem to not be aware of anything, I'm gonna narrow it down for you." Ara spoke up. "We were sent on a quest by the Oracle, by the gods. That's how it's supposed to be: hard. That's why only certain people are chosen. And if you were chosen, then some bigger power must think you are up for it. And if we set off with you, then we knew what we were signing in for. If we call camp, we're basically saying it was a mistake to send us."
"I'm completely comfortable with that..." Percy raised his shoulders. "Everyone makes mistakes."
"It's not that simple, Percy." Annabeth jumped in. "If we don't do this, not only do we let down the opportunity to prove ourselves, but we also let this whole mess fall over us. We were chosen for this quest, it is our duty to see it through."
"But we're just a bunch of kids who clearly can't handle this."
"Speak for yourself." Ara glanced back at him.
"I think it would be better to tell Chiron the truth so he can send someone more competent."
"Why are you so afraid of who you are?" Annabeth turned to him, starting to get annoyed.
"What?"
"You know, what's interesting about this particular satyr path is it's actually the one my Uncle Ferdinand took when he set out on his own quest." Grover tried to change the subject, but failed.
"What was that supposed to mean, afraid of who I am?" Percy furrowed his eyebrows. "I'm not afraid."
"Yes, you are." Annabeth corrected him. "You aren't just a kid. "Just a kid" doesn't do what you did to Clarisse back at camp. "Just a kid" doesn't have Hades sending his top lieutenants to retrieve them. You know, you are part of something so much bigger than we can understand right now. We have to move forward, whether you like it or not, whether you want to or not." the brunette insisted.
"You don't want to call camp, fine. Then, at least let's call your mom."
At the sound of his words, Annabeth's expression hardened. "Excuse me?"
