"Sonic: Set Free" is a comic I have been working on for seven months! I have yet to finish it, but because the volume is nearly finished, I'm going to start posting what I have finished of the comic when I can. The story is about my oc, a blue fox named Ethan who lives in a peaceful village as a blacksmith apprentice. He crosses paths with a mad scientist named Dr.Robotnik (Eggman) who captures Ethan, experiments on him, and takes him away to a completely different planet. Ethan barely escapes and ends up crossing paths with Sonic the Hedgehog and friends.
This story will be set in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie universe, and the story will be taking place after the events of Sonic 2 movie. The story will not cover spoilers from either movies, it's simply taking place in the movie universe cause I love the Sonic live action films so much! The most the book will talk about is how Eggman got into a fight with Sonic and his friends before getting defeated and falling to, what was assumed, to be his death- and we know because Jim Carriey officially starring in Sonic 3 that his character is returning. Eggman has always been a character that typically returns even after getting defeated- so that's the most spoiler-like thing that would even be in this book, if that can even be considered a spoiler.
But Sonic was my hero as a child. I always watched cartoons every Saturday morning, and evenings after school. I played with a Sonic the Hedgehog plush I got from a yard sale that I was able to pick out even before I knew who Sonic was- I was always drawn to his character from the start! And I played with that plush until the head came off- twice! And both times my mom would stitch his head back on for me.
Lately, I don't care for the Sonic tv shows ever since "Sonic Boom" made its debut- the tv shows are too cheesy and goofy, and the plot and story isn't anything like Sonic X or Sonic Underground- something about these 2d sonic shows just hit different for me.And now that I'm better at drawing animals than I was years ago, I wanted to make a Sonic comic based on a random Sonic oc I wrote a concept idea on. And yeah, the story will be kinda cringe, its gonna be centered around both sonic movie and sonic unleashed combined. But at least the oc I whipped up "Ethan" is awesome! I cherish this dude and will probably include him in future Sonic projects I may create in the future whether its comics or novels.
I did feel when I read the script to this story, it was somewhat cringe and I read it to my sis and we laughed together. But then I decided to challenge myself- what if I tried to adapt Ethan's beginning into a comic and try and make it something fun to read? So I decided to do it! Plus I haven't drawn Sonic or made comics over the Sonic series since I was in elementary and middle school. So why not?
I loved drawing out the comic and seeing the characters and world come to life in beautiful and vibrant colors, it was fun! It was also interesting making this because I typically make Anime comics centered around human characters. This time around, I made animal characters which were fun and different!
Lately I've been suffering burnout when it comes to my art- and I think I discovered what it was. I have started way too many projects. I would start a chapter in a bunch of my sketchbooks, but then neglect them, and it really began to build up. And now I am overwhelmed when it comes to wanting to finish them all. But I'm going to try and tackle one after another now- and if I can at least work on three pages a day (or more) I think I should be able to make progress! Once I finish my comic projects that I have already started, I will just focus on one book at a time so I won't have to worry about my other projects or feel pressured into finishing my books quickly.Rome wasn't built in a day, and this certainly took more than a day! I hope that anyone who reads can enjoy this comic, even if there are flaws. I made it for mine and others enjoyment. Because of how long it took me to make this, I am thinking about making "Sonic: Set Free" into a novel series where every right side of the page will have drawings- just because I'm starting to want to focus on other stories now and making novels might help me cut corners when it comes to my longer and more ambitious stories. I have a lot of one shot stories planned for the future, along with other books that will be a couple volumes long.
I was worried when I started getting overwhelmed and burnt out on my comics that I'd want to stop- but I decided to take my time, try and squeeze in three pages a day and I think I am starting to enjoy my art again, yay! I try not to think about how many projects I have started and to just focus on one or two books at a time.
I look forward to getting a few pages worked on each day again. And I'm hoping once I get caught up with all my over projects I started months ago, that maybe, I can be more relaxed with my projects and just make one story at a time. That's the plan!
I think I made my authors note way too long, I just enjoy writing lol! Thanks for reading my author's note, and I hope that anyone who checks out my comic, that you enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed creating it! 😊-⨶ฬ𝐋♞ᏞᎬᎶᎬᏁᎠ♛
