"Hyung, did you know halmeoni is coming over for New Years?" Jisung asked, draping himself over Minho, who was sitting on the couch in the middle of the living room. "I haven't seen her in forever!"
Minho perked up at that. "Really?"
"Yep!" Jisung said with a nod, craning his neck to see what Minho was watching on his phone. "Ugh, business emails? Hyung, stop working so much."
"If I don't work, I won't be able to help support your vivacious lifestyle, Sung-ah," Minho argued, pushing Jisung off of him and onto the floor. "Maybe if you used your brain more, you'd be self-sufficient."
Jisung pouted, punching Minho's shin. "Why overwork myself when I have my wonderful brother to cover me, hmm?"
Minho just scoffed and rolled his eyes. "I'm telling appa that you don't need his support then," he threatened.
He got up and walked over to the porch, opening the door to take a breather. The house was cozy, filled with the warm scents of comfort food baking in the oven and buzzing with the anticipation of visiting family. It all felt too much to Minho.
Ever since his parents died in his first year of high school and Jisung's family ended up adopting him, holidays have been so much more important, and with that, a thousand times busier.
Speaking of, this'd be the first time Minho has seen his grandmother since his parents' funeral. Last time he was in her presence, she had given him a hug and an envelope containing a copy of his parents' will, the words detailing what he received from them highlighted with a bright yellow marker.
It was more than a little depressing, but that was how his family worked. No time to be sappy or mourn, there were things to do and you shouldn't be waiting to get them done.
Immediately after the funeral, Jisung's parents came up to him and offered to adopt him. Him and Jisung had been next door neighbors for their whole lives, and were best friends as well, so it would make sense for the younger's parents to step in to take care of him.
Dealing with his parents' death was painful, to say the least. But Jisung was always there when he needed him, always eager to provide Minho with a quiet, steady, comforting shoulder to lean on.
Jisung never even batted an eye when Minho moved in, welcoming him with open arms and a bright, gummy smile. He quickly combined their families, so excited to finally have a grandma, since both of his had died before he was born, and Minho didn't have the heart to tell him that his grandma had never been a major part of his life.
The hardest part of moving in with Jisung and also becoming his step-brother, was that Jisung had been his first crush, his gay awakening, and maybe also his current infatuation. No one knew, of course. How insane would he have to be to tell people he had a crush on his step-brother . He'd never make that mistake.
Once Minho felt more relaxed, he wiggled his shoulders and took a deep breath of the cold December air, heading back into the house. Jisung giggled and waved him over when he noticed Minho, excitedly showing the older a photobook he had found in the box of holiday decorations.
They had been setting up decorations all morning, until they had gotten hungry and took a break to eat a quick lunch, which had turned to both of them abandoning the large box full of decorations and doing other unimportant things instead.
"Hyungie, look, it's us as little kids!" Jisung exclaimed, pointing at a photo of Minho and Jisung in front of Jisung's family's Christmas tree from what it looked like fifteen years ago.
