Chapter Three: Sleeping with a Friend-Neon Trees
Kate's POV:
"Mike, breathe. I'll be with you the entire time. Relax." Sam said to an extremely nervous Mike. This was his first time flying and he made it very clear that he was uncomfortable with the situation. I laughed as I took my seat beside the window, Luke shoving his bag in the overhead compartment. We had made an agreement that I would be able to get the window seat to Vegas, and he would get it coming back. Sam and Mike sat in the row beside us, both agreeing with the same arrangement as Luke and I.Once we were seated, the flight attendants voice came over the speakers, announcing the proper safety regulations in case of an emergency. Luke rolled his eyes as she demonstrated how to use the oxygen mask, a little over dramatically. I peaked over to see how Mike was doing, noticing his eyes never leaving the flight attendant, making sure he had every word of advice memorized in his very anxious mind.
When the pilot announced take off, Mike grabbed Sams hand in a tight vice, her discomfort noticeable. He closed his eyes, took deep breaths, and rested his head back against the seat. I relaxed back in mine, watching the trees below us get smaller and smaller, everything soon looking like ants. I liked take off the best. The rush you got with the speed of the plane jetting into the air, leaving everything and everyone behind.
After a few minutes the seatbelt lights turned off, allowing us to get comfortable on our long flight.
"Wasn't too bad, huh?" Luke asked, looking at me. I smiled and shook my head.
"I can't say the same for Michael. Has he even opened his eyes yet?" Luke turned to see a still belted Mike, looking pale and shaken. Sam pried her fingers from his grip, undoing her own buckle.
"Mike, we're in the air. Everything's fine. Just relax and look at me." She said, finally getting him to look her in the eyes. He seemed okay until he looked out the window to see us thousands of feet in the air, high above the clouds. What I didn't expect was to watch him jump up from his seat in a panic, knocking into an old woman on her way towards the bathroom. She fell back into the lap of the man in front of us, stumbling to get back on her feet.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry ma'am." Michael said, trying to help her up. She proceeded to hit him repeatedly with her bag, causing Luke and I to break out in to hysterics. Only Mike would be able to cause this much of a scene in such little time.
"I'm sorry sir, but you cannot disrupt this flight like that. You're jeopardizing the safety of the rest of the passengers. Please remain in your seat, and refrain from anymore outbursts. Thank you." The flight attendant said as friendly as she could given the circumstance. Mike nodded his head in shame, looking at us for support, only to be met by our failed attempts at hiding our snickering.
"Mike, I love you, but you need to calm the fuck down." Sam said, grabbing the sides of his face forcing him to look her in the eye.
"Babe, I can't help it. This is new for me. I know I put on this big tough bravado, but deep down I have fears just like everyone else." He said in a mocking tone.
"Well I have yet to see this tough guy." Sam said teasing. He swatted at her before leaning back in his seat and closing his eyes. She took out a book and opened up to where she left off.
I sat back, noticing Luke looking at me.
"What?"
"Nothing. You excited for Vegas?" He asked, taking a sip of the drink the attendant had brought to him.
"Of course I am. This is the farthest west I've ever been. It's nice to just get away and breathe for a while. Plus who better than to spend the weekend with than the three most amazing people?" I said smiling. Luke returned the gesture and pulled my chin up for a kiss.
