Chapter Eight: Close As Strangers-5 Seconds of Summer

Another month had passed by and Katelyn and I were actually doing a lot better.  I had been invited to all her doctors appointments, and even went to the following ultrasound.  It wasn't much but it was progress and I would gladly take it.  The baby was developing right along schedule, and was growing bigger by the minute.  Kate was almost done with her second trimester, leaving us just three more months to start planning everything out. We had spent time figuring out what we needed to buy, how the living situation was going to work between the two of us, and trying to agree on baby names.  For the most part we were getting along great.  Things seemed to be falling back into place. But there were times when the incident would somehow be brought up again, and our progress would take two steps backwards.

Today I had plans to meet Kate at her school to spend the afternoon buying a crib, car seats, play pens and clothes.  It wasn't much but it was definitely a start.  Three months was not a long time to prepare for a baby, especially considering how fast the last six had gone by.  I left work a little early, Max completely understanding my reasoning. He even offered for me to take a few weeks off once the baby was here. Depending on how Katelyn and I were doing, I may take him up on that offer.

I headed down the street, seeing the familiar brick building in the distance.  It really was a good school, and I was proud of Kate for getting a job here. She seemed to love it and the students apparently loved her too.  How could they not, though? She was always good with kids.  She's going to make an even better mom.

When I pulled in I saw her walking towards her car, a tall guy walking besides her.  He had brown hair, and glasses that were too big for his face.  He kind of reminded me of Ashton, but was much more boyish in his features.  My inner jealousy began to seep out, and I tried to remain calm while I parked the car a few spots down, them still not noticing my presence. I watched as they spoke, standing a little too close for my comfort.  She laughed at something he said, making him smile at her the same way I do. Judging by the look in his eyes, he had feelings for her.  I couldn't see hers to tell if she seemed to reciprocate those feelings, but I prayed to God she didn't.  Suddenly he reached up and touched her face, pushing her long blonde hair out of the way and behind her ear. She blushed and looked down, he did the same. That was it.  Before I knew it I was out of the car grabbing him by the shirt.

"Don't you dare touch her" I yelled in his face, causing him to stumble backwards.  I felt bad for the guy because he didn't look like the type who could hold his own, and I definitely wasn't in the mindset to take it easy on him.

"Luke stop! He's a friend. We work together." Kate said, stepping between the two of us.  She had one hand pressed against my chest, the other on her stomach.  I had to calm down, she was in no condition to be dealing with all of this.

"This is Luke?" The guy asked, looking at Kate.  She grimaced and nodded her head. He looked up at me with such anger, that it made me second guess my previous judgments about him.

"How could you do that to her? You selfish cheating bastard! She deserves better than that!" He yelled, trying to get at me, but Katelyn was in the way. I looked at her in disbelief.

"You told him?" I asked.

Her eyes were panicked.

"Luke let's just go and talk about this." She said.   I turned and walked back to my car, waiting for her while she spoke to the guy. How could she have told him? I mean I had no right to say anything considering I was the "cheating bastard," but that was between me and her; not her coworkers.

When they were done talking, he gave me one last look before turning back for the school.  Kate looked at me and hesitantly walked forward.

"I'm so sorry Luke, I-"
