Right after school ends, Cameron waited patiently at the gates for a red haired, Kennedy. She looked far ahead, tiptoeing to get a better view but her friend was not to be seen. She was busy searching that she hasn't come to realize the figure looming beside her. When he coughed, only then she gives her attention to him. Her eyes were large, her hands become sweaty, her heart pounded against her chest. This might be her chance of getting a prince charming. She anticipated the words that will blurt out of his mouth but in few seconds, her sweat will turn cold as she read the name on the letter she was handed. Kennedy, in a red cursive writing written in the hyacinth letter. She laughed nervously as Kennedy approached her. Heath left without so much of a word.
Cameron's heart drops when Kennedy caught sight of what she's clenching. There's no time to hide. It's about time they had a talk that may affect the stability of their friendship. Five years and still going strong, nothing a measly letter can break. When the look of Kennedy's face is too overwhelming, Cameron sprinted to her house, leaving the letter falls on the ground. Kennedy was stranded, thinking if she should run after her or gave her space that was long due. She chose the latter and stride home, lost in her own thoughts. The letter on the other hand, was picked up by the person who had seen enough of the scenario to understand what he should do next. With a smirk, he jogged to his Jeep and hums a song as he drives to Cameron's.
James had to wait ten minutes or so until Cameron finally reached her house. His yellow Jeep can be seen yards away but Cameron was too busy in her thoughts to notice. Only when she saw James kicking back at the front porch with her dad, she snapped back to reality. She kicked a littered can on the driveway and hit James' head who was occupied in discussion with Warren. Warren was at first, taken aback at James sudden interruption. As far as he knows, they had cut ties after they first moved but nonetheless, he's happy that parts of Cameron's past sneaking into her presents. Warren left the pair be after scolding his daughter's unladylike behavior. A venomous glare was thrown to James who was tending his bruised forehead. He raised his hands, surrendering.
"I don't know what you're up to showing up here unannounced but don't expect leaving unharmed." She threatened and James was sure that all her words held truth. He takes few steps forward until they were an arm apart and leaned to her level.
With a playful smile he breathed, "let's date." Which in return Cameron laughed horrendously at. She was holding her stomach to sustain the pain of laughing too much.
She wiped excess tears from her eyes and shift her expression to grim. "Funny, now shoo." She was ready to dismiss James but a purple letter stopped her from her tracks. There, between James' fingers, is the letter that made Kennedy and Cameron didn't walked home together for the first time. She gasped and ran to his side. "How did you get that?"
James raised the letter over his head so Cameron can't reach it. A smug smile hinted as he spoke, "relax Hughes, I'll help you this time. In return, give me the book." He made her froze to her spot. She knows exactly what book he referred but she'll give anything but that. Besides, what help is he going to offer? Sensing her doubt, he continues, "Cameron fancy Heath, Heath fancy Ken. Cameron don't want to be pitied. Such high ego. Anyways, she's giving silent treatment. Ken don't know what to do so she's giving Cameron space. Damn, talk about drama."
He knows people too much. Years of acting and observing people comes in handy in these situations. He's using people's weakness to follow his ways but Cameron is not one of his toys. She kneed James where the sun doesn't shine and snatched the letter. She stuck her tongue out and ran inside the house, locking him out. James had no choice but leave.
