I guess you could say lunch was uneventful.

But that would more or less be a lie.

Lunch was . . . Interesting. I sat down next to Marcus, like usual, and Leo sat the farthest away from us as possible. I rolled my eyes at him and he scowled at me. If he was going to be ridiculous, might as well let him. Not like I was going to waste my breath debating and/or arguing.

Not while Marcus was sitting right there.

Bree plopped down in the other seat next to me on my right, flopping her backpack on the floor with a loud thump. "Gosh, I hate math!" she complained. "Why do they feel the need to add the alphabet to numbers?"

Chase almost spit out his drink from laughing and I giggled along with Marcus. Even Adam found it funny, and he never found anything academic funny, like at all. I think he wasn't quite . . . bright enough to understand such things. Which was fine, but also a bit funny in itself.

"You know, Bree," Chase began, setting his drink down carefully after swallowing, "I would help you with it, but you never let me."

"That's because you explain everything horribly," she spat at him.

"I do not!"

"Yes you do!"

"Alright, alright," I jumped in. "Don't make me separate you two. Cut it out."

They proceeded to glare at each other from across the table. I never really understood their sibling dynamic. I guess being cooped up in a basement for the majority of their life could be kind of detrimental to their mental health, so that probably had an effect on their relationship too. I couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like if I was quarantined with Landon for our entire lives. Yes, I love the kid, but I don't know for how long if something like that happened.

Marcus turned his water bottle up and took a few swallows, setting it down on the table before turning to me. "How were your classes?" he asked.

My face heated slightly. "They were good," I replied. I couldn't believe he was actually interested. Maybe he was just being friendly? "How about yours?"

He shrugged. "They were meh. Went on a bit too long."

"You lost focus, didn't you?"

He laughed, flashing his white teeth at me. "More or less."

The conversation continued as usual, not much different from the other ones we'd had up to that point. But I could not get Leo to stop glaring at us from across the table. His black eyes were definitely trying to shoot daggers at us and I was having none of it. But I wasn't able to speak up first.

Marcus said something first.

"Leo, you got something to say?" he asked, just enough neutrality to make it seem like nothing was wrong, but enough edge to make it known that he'd had enough of the stares.

Leo shifted his glare fully toward Marcus. "I don't know, Marcus. You going to start telling the truth?"

Marcus returned the glare, and the lightning between their eyes was so strong it was almost visible like it was in anime. I actually thought Leo was about to lunge at Marcus from across the table until Adam jumped in to say something.

"Leo, why do you keep bringing your super active imagination into this?" he asked. "We all know that you're obsessed with those cartoons you watch in your room, but life is not a cartoon. Cartoons are way cooler."

I was actually kind of shocked that Adam was making sense with something for once. Where on earth did that come from? He never made sense, and that was one of his charms.

Luckily, his comment appeared to work since Leo didn't bring up the whole Marcus situation again at lunch. He actually fully avoided us throughout the rest of the day, which was not surprising. He was pretty stubborn sometimes.

Marcus followed me up the steps of the bus and down the aisle in the middle, taking his seat next to me. Bree was right behind him and her jaw dropped when she saw that he had taken her usual seat. She looked like she was about to protest or tell Marcus off, but her face slowly smoothed over with a realization of some sort and she smirked, sitting down next to her friend Caitlin instead.

I raised an eyebrow at her but she just smiled knowingly and turned her attention to her other blond friend. My face heated once I discovered what she meant.

Marcus was sitting next to me on the bus.

And before I knew it, he was leaning in to whisper something in my ear.

"I didn't get my hug after lunch."

The shivers that went down my body were so numerous that I couldn't count them. Why was he talking to me like that? And why on earth did it sound so . . . attractive? His deep tone, soft words, the slight rumble in his throat with each syllable.

I felt the strange urge to run my hands through his hair and pull him closer. His perfect brown locks were just . . . there. Taunting me, begging me to touch them. Can you blame me?

"Sorry," I said with a nervous laugh. "Do you want one right now?" Please say yes.

He smirked and leaned back to look at me, making my heart wrench at the distance. The effect this guy was having on me was crazy. Nothing like this had ever happened before to me. Sure, I had crushes, but holy crap.

This was insane.

His eyes fell to my lips for a moment before looking back up at me. He had a glint in his eye that made my heart flutter.

Is he about to . . . ?

His hand pressed something into my palm. I blinked in confusion. He stood up from his seat and that was when I noticed the bus had stopped moving. Were we at his house already?

He winked at me and said, "Don't be late" before getting off the bus and trotting up the driveway to his house.

I looked down at my hand to see what he had given me. It was a folded piece of paper. No way. My heart hammered as I unfolded it, anticipation tickling the back of my neck. Small words were scrawled on the paper in blue ink.

Football field tomorrow night at 8. See you there, Goldilocks
