"You aren't paying attention to me at all, are you?"
I shook myself, blinking rapidly. "Sorry, Bree. What were you saying?"
Bree Davenport sighed, grinning at me knowingly. She and I had been friends long enough that she could tell exactly what was going on with me. I guess girls have a better intuition with stuff like that than boys do.
I truth, I wasn't really listening to her at all. I was just zoning out while replaying my moments with Marcus in my head. I've never been the best at focusing, but you throw a cute guy into the equation? I'm cooked; air fried.
She flicked her long brown hair over her shoulder and looked at me with her large brown eyes. "There's definitely something going on. Spill."
"Why would I tell you?" I asked, giving her a tired look.
She rolled her eyes at me and groaned. "Don't do that."
"Don't do what?"
"Be all closed off and mysterious!" she complained. "It's exhausting."
I gave her a look and shook my head in disappointment. It felt like sometimes she couldn't let privacy be privacy. I guess if you grow up in a basement your whole life sleeping next to your two brothers in a glass tube, you don't really grow up with the concept.
But regardless. This is still my crap that I'm dealing with.
She batted her big eyes at me and clasped her hands together pleadingly. "Puh-lease!"
"You're not gonna let this go, are you?" I asked, looking at her from over the rims of my glasses.
She grinned widely. "Nope!"
I sighed and pushed my glasses further up my nose. "Fine."
I let out everything from that afternoon. I'm not going to lie, I got more and more excited as Bree's face changed with the amount of enthusiasm she was feeling. It wasn't too long until she was grinning ear to ear while listening to my story about Marcus and how he put his arm over my shoulders, describing every detail about his physique and face, just just just—
Everything.
Bree collapsed on the couch dramatically, nearly knocking our science books off and forcing me to catch them with my hands.
"He sounds so cute!" she squealed. "And he plays guitar too? That's so awesome!"
"I know!" I sighed, my heart hammering at the memory.
I kept thinking about what it would be like to watch Marcus play the guitar; what songs he would be into. He seemed like a Bon Jovi guy to me, but I could neither confirm nor deny that.
I looked at her again and fidgeted with my hands. "So, uh," I began slowly, "do you think I'm right about him flirting with me, or am I just crazy?"
Bree shot up. "Nu uh. He is head-over-heels for you, girl. He put his arm over your shoulder." She pressed her palm to her chest and stared dreamily up at the ceiling. "He's totally in love."
I frowned. "Bree. I know you barely have any experience with guys in the real world"—she glared at me—"but saying he is 'in love' is pushing it."
She shot me a dirty look and stuck out her tongue playfully. "Let me have this, will you?"
I rolled my eyes and shook my head, turning my attention back to our science books. I didn't have a good feeling about this test coming up anyways, and having a new distraction was going to make it ten times more difficult. Might as well put some extra study time in, right?
