Chili walked about the kingdom, picking some pockets, snatching some wallets, the usual. It was so close to a perfect day, so, so, close. But something inside Chili was aching terribly.
You see, Chili had a nightmare the night before. It wasn't anything too horrific, just a visit to her childhood bedroom. But with that sight came a heap of feelings spilling out of its weak barriers. Her heart was heavy with the pain and regrets of the past. She hated that stupid house, filled with all those stupid people. She left for a reason, she never wanted to be reminded of that place. She's succeeded in that for years, never having to think about her childhood as she threw away any cares she had, being able to live completely and utterly free. But that bliss was bound to end someday. And she guessed that day was today.
Chili slowed in her steps as she spun her knife in between her fingers. She had become skilled with knife-play, it was the most reliable weapon she had. Did a lot of damage too. She carelessly fiddled with it, whistling a tune and heading towards the edge of the forest. She tossed her knife up in the air, and almost caught the handle.
Almost.
Chili suppressed a scream as she accidentally grabbed the sharp edge of her knife. See, this knife was different from the other ones she had. It had a pokey edge bending backwards, with multiple sharp edges across the front of the blade. Chili dropped her knife on the ground and she held her bleeding hand with the other.
"Oh, fuck. Goddammit Chili, you good for nothin'"
Chili picked up her blade with her left hand and put in her belt. She inspected her damaged hand. There was a deep cut in the side of her pointer finger and multiple shallow cuts along her palm. The stinging pain rang through her nerves, but she's handled worse, it'll be fine. She didn't feel like walking back to her house anyways.
Chili continued her walk down to the forests edge, ignoring the pain in her arm as she arrived at her destination. Upon reaching, she noticed a familiar face.
Why, it was Custard! What was he even doing at the forest edge, doesn't he know it's dangerous?
"Hi Chili!" Custard yelled, waving enthusiastically.
Chili sped up and stopped at Custards side, ruffling his hair.
"Hey kid, what're you doin' here? Y'know it's dangerous." Chili expressed with concern. Custard frowned and crossed his arms arrogantly.
"Don't call me kid! And I'm here because I can. I'm the future king after all." Chili rolled her eyes at Custards antics.
"Yeah, yeah, if you're gonna be king then you've gotta stay safe till then." Chili replied, smoothing back Custards hair. Custard looked down and the two stayed silent for a while, until Custard broke the silence.
"But I'm already eight! Before you know it, I'm gonna be old enough to fight off any monster!" Custard yelled while making a grand pose. Obviously, Chili knew that Custard probably couldn't handle fighting a horde of monsters by himself, but then again, he's a kid. Kids should be able to dream and imagine,
'Not like I could relate' Chili thought bitterly. Custard seemed to notice this random change in her mood, and tilted his head in curiosity.
"You okay, Chili?" He asked.
Chili avoided eye contact as she mustered up a response. "I'm fine, kid." Custard still seemed concerned but shrugged. "Wanna head into the forest now? I would hate to keep my majesty waiting." Chili said with much sarcasm. Custard perked up and nodded his head excitedly.
Chili laughed and they both walked off into the forest.

The two had been walking for a good while now, and Custard was starting to get bored.
"Ughhhh there's nothing out here today! I wanna go home." Custard whined while crossing his arms.
"Yeah, Gingerballs and his boyfriend must've gotten rid of all the cake hounds already." Chili responded. Custard looked up at her, confused.
"Gingerballs? Boyfriend?" He asked.
"Ohhhh, right. So basically, Gingerballs is the nickname i gave Brave because it's hilarious and he hates it, and his boyfriend is Wizard." Chili answered.
"GingerBrave and Wizard are dating!?" Custard exclaimed.
"Well, no, not exactly. But they're so obviously in love they basically are." Chili said. Custard stayed quiet, seemingly satisfied with the answer.
They continued walking for a short while longer, hoping to find something, but to no prevail. Just when the two were about to return home, they heard a low growl.
"Did you hear that?" Chili whispered, taking out her knife with her non injured hand. Custard held on tightly to Chilis sleeve, gripping his staff.
"Yeah.. I heard it." He said.
The growl came again, this time with much more ferocity as a large cake hound jumped out of the woods. Custard yelped as Chili swung at the hound with her knife. She landed the hit as the hound howled with pain.
"Heh, taste defeat you stupid hound!" Chili yelled. Custard cheered her on while occasionally landing a hit and healing Chili.
But turns out, the hound was a lot more powerful than they had thought. Chilis hand had started to bleed again, and Custard was getting tired.
"Ugh, when is this thing gonna die!?" Chili complained, in between pants.
"I don't know.. but I'm getting tired." Custard replied. Chili looked over her shoulders and saw custard on his knees, too weak to stand. Chili tried running to him in concern, but the hound beat her there. It jumped over her head and landed right behind Custard, a cloud of dust forming behind it. The hound opened its large jaws, baring its razor sharp teeth.
The only thing going through Chilis brain was the image of Custards head being bitten right off.
Acting off of pure adrenaline, Chili ran forward to Custard, stopping in between him and the hound as she wrapped one arm around Custard and placed the other one in front of the hounds jaws to shield them. She squeezed her eyes shut, holding Custard tightly in her arms.
All she could feel was the burning, throbbing pain going through her arm and shoulder. It was almost too much to bare. From the power of true fear for her and Custards life, she swung her un-bitten arm around and stabbed the hound straight in the eye.
It let out a blood curling howl as blood sputtered from the wound. Chili extracted the knife and the hound ran off, leaving a trail of blood in its wake.
Chilis arm dropped, as she collapsed to the ground on her side. Custard staggered to his feet, speechless at the sight in front of him.
"CHILI! No, NO! PLEASE BE OKAY!" Custard screamed, dashing towards Chilis limp body and desperately trying to heal her. He wasn't used to healing such complicated wounds, all he could do was sit there and pray she would live king enough for him to drag her to the kingdom. Custard pulled her half conscious body up and supported her with his shoulder. She was much taller and heavier than him, proving the task to be difficult.
Custard used the small reserve of energy he had left and dragged Chili back to the kingdom.
