Food. Foraging. Hunting.
That's what me and Lav are doing, right now. We are digging up all of the roots, berries and plants we can find and if we see a squirrel or a rabbit, Lav is killing that. This may seem like a lot for two 11 year olds to handle, but it's okay. We're used to it. Lavender mainly handles the hunting, while I mainly handle the foraging.I dig up some blueberries and see a squirrel. I point it out to Lav
"Hey, why don't you try to get this one?" Lav asks, handing me the knife. I've never hunted before, or killed an animal. I grab the knife and throw it at the animal, and it gets stabbed.
I run up to the animal, and see it is dead. I start to wail. I killed. I killed an innocent squirrel. I collapse onto the ground, ignoring the game I just killed. I sob. I can't believe I just did that.
"What's wrong?!" Lavender asks, running up to me.
"I-I killed him. The squirrel. I can't believe it. I murdered it. I am a murderer." Lav starts to comfort me. This makes me realize that in one year if I am reaped for the hunger game I could never kill. And if I did I couldn't live with it. If this is how I handle killing a squirrel, taking an innocent animal's life, imagine me killing a real person. I can't.
"I think it's best if I handle the hunting from now on." Lavender strokes my hair while we lay in the grass.
I love forests and trees. We spend almost all our time when we are not at school here. We love it.
"I think that would be best." I agree. And I look away, as lavender cleans and guts the squirrel. We quickly bring it back to the community home. When we get there, we see Mrs Alberta. For a second, we tense as we do whenever we are around her. Mrs Alberta gives frequent beatings to kids who don't follow her rules, and me and Lav have been subjected to them more than once. We walk into the Girls room, where it's super loud obviously since there's at least 150 girls here right now. Me and Lav head to our bed. All of a sudden, Mrs Alberta is at the door, and a little girl, no older than 4 or 5 is here. I wonder if her parents were a victim of the rebellion, which only ended less than a year ago.
"Hello kids. This is Lily Emerson. She is 4, and is coming here. We need someone to volunteer to bring her into your bed." Most people in the community home already have 3 to a bed, but me and Lavender only have two. So I raise my hand.
But the main reason isn't that. The main reason is I couldn't stand to watch the cruel world crush her like a bug. I was 6 when I arrived here, and I nearly starved to death. I couldn't watch her get annihilated. Lily walks up to us. Me and Lav crouch down, trying to match her height.
"Hey, I'm Iris. Like the flower." I say.
"I'm Lavender, Also like the flower." She smiles
"I'm Lily. Also like the flower." She softly speaks.
"Well, that's official. We are going to keep you safe Lily. You are offially a member of the trio of flowers." I smile and Lily hugs us.
Looks like I got a new sister.
