Rafe had to drive me home the night before because Sarah had left with Topper and I didn't know where my brother had gone. Luckily, my parents were asleep when I got home, so they probably didn't notice anything, even though they were at the Cameron's before.
Now I'm sitting in my room, completely tired from yesterday, but still trying to fix myself because I don't know what awaits me today. But my thoughts just keep going back to yesterday. It's hard to understand that I was sitting and talking with Rafe just like that. That he actually seems to care a little about me. That whole part feels strange. We're supposed to hate each other.
"Adeline!" I hear my mom call from outside my room, but I can't be bothered to answer. Probably nothing important.
"Adeline," she says again and opens the door to my room. "Rafe is here." As soon as I hear his name, I look up in surprise at my mom.
"What do you mean?" I ask, surprised.
"Come down, he shouldn't have to wait so long," she says and starts walking downstairs again. Should I really go down to him? But there's something in me that wants to know what he's doing here, so I follow all the way down to the front door where Rafe stands with... flowers in his hands.
Am I dreaming?
I must be dreaming. I have to pinch myself to see that I'm not dreaming.
"Hi," he says and smiles at me. I just know it's Ward who forced him to do this.
"Hi?" I say, but it comes out more like a question. My mom is coming over and stands behind me.
"I'm so glad you took the time to take my daughter out on a date. We're so proud of you," my mom says and smiles at Rafe, who gives her some smile back. Now I really don't understand anything. Who forced Rafe to do this?
"Are you coming?" Rafe asks, and when he sees me hesitate, he gives me an irritated look as if I'm supposed to understand that I have to play along, and for some reason, I listen to him.
"Sure," I say and walk out the door where Rafe stands.
"Goodbye, have fun! But not too much fun," my mom says after us when she closes the door. I ignore my mom and stop in front of Rafe as soon as she has closed the door.
"What are you doing?!" I almost scream at him.
"Don't think it was my idea," Rafe mutters. "But come on, we have to leave before Nate comes."
"Oh my gosh," I say while reluctantly following Rafe to his car. Rafe hurries in front of me and opens the car door for me so that I can sit in the passenger seat. I roll my eyes at him and he closes the door he and hurries around to sit in the driver's seat next to me.
"I thought you would said thank you," Rafe says. "By the way, here are the flowers if you're interested."
"I'm allergic to pollen, so I'm not much for flowers, but thanks, I guess," I say and still accept the flowers, putting them in my lap. Ready to start sneezing any second now.
Rafe starts driving the car and we get on the road that leads to the cut, and I immediately start wondering what we're doing.
"Where are we going?" I wonder, looking out at the road.
"You'll see," Rafe says with a proud smile on his lips. Why am I doing this? That's the question I ask myself daily. Every time I'm with Rafe.
"I hate you," I whisper so he can't hear, but then he takes my hand that's closest to him and looks straight into my eyes.
