bokuto and atsumu watched curiously as sakusa sat by the benches, his eyes glued to his phone. he was just staring. he would tap on the screen occasionally, but besides that he hadn't moved his fingers an inch.

"what do you think he's doing?" atsumu asked as he propped himself up on the padded pole. bokuto simply shook his head, leaning on the other side.

"i don't know.." he trailed off, his eyes flickering over the boy. "must be important though. he's never on his phone during practice."

"right? that's what i was thinking." the two continued to shamelessly gawk at sakusa. after another minute he finally put his phone away with a huff, shoving it into his bag.

sakusa slipped his mask off and tossed it in the trash before walking onto the court. atsumu smiled impishly. "what were you doing over there, omi?"

sakusa glanced at him, his lips pressed into a hard line. he said nothing before looking away.

"texting someone?" bokuto chirped, making sakusa tense. the suggestion made his hand twitch and his eyes drift over the gym floors.

"no," he muttered, walking past them.

the two spun around to face him. "liar!" atsumu laughed, pushing himself off the pole and walking after him, bokuto happily doing the same.

"ohh, i got him?" bokuto asked, his grin widening.

sakusa couldn't understand why this was any of their business, but he knew they wouldn't stop prying until they got something. regardless, he would never tell them the truth.

"get me? i wasn't texting anyone," sakusa quietly reassured, but it didn't stop either boy from making assumptions.

"the only person i can think of is.. y/n!" atsumu pointed an accusing finger at his teammate, sakusa's jaw tightening as he tried to ignore atsumu.

"no.." bokuto hummed. "i don't think so."

he remembered you saying that you didn't text him anymore. sure, sakusa might've responded to your drunk texts, but bokuto really didn't see him doing that any more than that.

but in truth, a lot of the things bokuto couldn't imagine sakusa doing, sakusa was secretly doing: texting you, helping you with homework, going to your dorm, thinking about agreeing to a study session with you– it was all unfathomable to him, and yet sakusa was doing it.

atsumu's mouth fell open. "what does he mean no?! you couldn't possibly be texting someone else. you don't talk to y/n anymore?!"

"no, i don't."

sakusa inwardly scolded himself. he was such a liar. since when was he a liar?

"what about my experiment?" atsumu scowled.

sakusa glared at him before shrugging. "i don't know what to tell you, miya. it just wasn't worth it."

"experiment?" bokuto raised a brow at the blonde who only shook his head. "no, no, i want to know what it was." bokuto pushed atsumu, earning a playful nudge back.
