Prologue
"I am sorry...do we know each other?"
The woman before me suddenly seemed to falter, her face falling into an expression of shock. Her lovely smile had wilted, and her entrancing (e/c) eyes that had shone so brightly with joy just a moment ago now widened and became clouded. My chest ached uncomfortably at the pain in her eyes.
An unfamiliar feeling.
Her mouth fell open as if she wanted to speak, but no words left her lips for a few brief seconds, as if she was struggling to find her voice. She looked as confused as I certainly felt myself.
"You..."
She paused, blinking.
Then, a nervous smile crept onto her lips, and she shook her head, sputtering out a laugh, "Ah, I get it...it must be because it's been so long. Okay, Freddy, I get it, it took me a while to find you again. I'm sorry, all right? Please don't joke like that. After all this time, I've missed you so much, so don't joke with me like—"
"I am not joking."
Her false smile twitched but did not fall, and I could tell that she understood that I was indeed telling the truth, but she seemed desperate to believe otherwise. She began to lightly tremble, as if even her body itself was still trying to reject the notion that I did not know her—that we were strangers. Her eyes glimmered under the spotlights of my room as they welled with tears. It unsettled me to see such a distraught expression on someone's face. I had never seen anything like it before.
Her shivering limbs, her wide, frantic orbs, and her faltering smile—her distress was sincere.
Was she really someone that I was supposed to know?
I studied the curves of her face, her eyes, her lips, her unkempt hair...but none of her reminded me of anyone that I ever knew.
She seemed to shrink as she noticed my careful gaze, and the first tear fell from her eyes as I had concluded once more that she was entirely unfamiliar to me. I jolted as her face twisted with grief.
"D-Do not cry!" I practically squeaked as I reached for her shoulder, trying to calm her nerves.
My touch did nothing to soothe her. She went rigid as my palm brushed her skin.
My practiced smile did not help matters either, her face further contorted in sorrow as she held my gaze.
"Forgive me, I-I did not mean to upset you," I said softly, crouching a little to meet her eyes better, "Perhaps you are just confused, but surely—"
She suddenly shut her eyes and turned her face away, brushing my hand off of her shoulder.
Her voice was quiet, but steady as she spoke up again, "No, I...I'm sorry. You just..."
She lifted her eyes to mine once more, and this time, she was the one to study my face, as if she were searching for any semblance of familiarity. Her deep (e/c) eyes searched mine desperately, hoping to find something I wasn't sure was there. She looked pained as she finally dropped her gaze, her entire body slumping slightly as she exhaled a shaky breath.
I wanted to talk more, to ask her more about who she was, where she came from, and why she was here after hours looking for me, but she quickly composed herself and swiftly turned on her heel to start off toward the door before I could let the words out.
"I was mistaken," she said flatly, not turning to face me as she strode to the exit, "Sorry to bother you."
She was gone without another word.
