Chapter Three
"Please take it easy, the doctor said you should stay off that leg as much as possible for the next few days."
"Oh please, it's not that big of a deal. I can walk just fine."
"Your stitches will tear if you push yourself too hard! I will get you whatever you need, so please just lay down!"
You pouted, looking Freddy in the eyes defiantly. He only stared back more fiercely, his stern eyes reminding you much of Goldie's whenever the blond had decided to make himself your personal nurse whenever you had been injured in the past. The two bears always had been the most protective of you when it came to your health, and neither one of them stood for you neglecting yourself when you were hurt.
You relented with a sigh, letting Freddy guide you over to the couch to help you lay down.
You had either ignored it by virtue of every other crazy thing you were dealing with when talking to Freddy over the hours last night, or you just simply hadn't lost enough adrenaline to finally feel it until now, but your thigh really did ache, after all. As you tried your best to settle on the couch and relax, every movement you made seemed to cause your thigh to sting and ache even more.
You hissed in pain, and asked Freddy for some of the painkillers you'd been given to take home by the doctor, and the bear dutifully brought you the pills and a glass of water to help you wash them down. In the dark of the pizzeria basement, it had been difficult to see as clearly, but now, in the morning light shining through your windows, you really couldn't get used to seeing all those vibrant colors painted on his face.
It was so strange to look at. No wonder the nurses had kept staring at him when he brought you in...
Before you two had walked in to the hospital, you had remembered to tell him to cover his ears by wearing a hoodie you'd kept in the backseat of your car, but when the bright hospital lights shone on his face, the painted mask was still made clear.
"Freddy...um..."
"Yes?"
His attentive stare made it worse, and with your mind slightly more clear after the overwhelming events of last night, you couldn't meet his gaze anymore and turned your face away shyly.
"...never mind."
Was it even possible to wash that paint off of his face in his human form? And wouldn't it just reappear if he switched to his animatronic form and then back to his human form again? You tried not to think about it too hard.
You heard Freddy let out a sigh, and then his footsteps were echoing through the quiet house, moving away from the living room where you were still stuck on the couch. You tried to lift your head to see where he had gone, but even that minuscule action sent sharp pains throughout your body from your wounded leg, so you simply gave up and closed your eyes, trying to relax a bit.
After a minute, Freddy finally returned with a bundle of blankets and pillows in his arms. Without needing to be asked, he helped you lift your head so that he could place a soft pillow under you for you to rest on, and then he carefully set a thin blanket over you, cautiously trying to avoid aggravating your injuries as he did so.
When he finally deemed you tucked in well enough, he decided to simply sit on the floor beside the couch, watching you with avid eyes, as if you'd spontaneously bruise if he took his eyes off of you for a moment. You both sat there in silence for a while, just staring at each other like that, taking in the sight of the other.
He probably didn't realize he was doing it, but as his gaze roamed your countenance, he seemed to be scrutinizing you—studying every detail of your face as if it were some sort of painting in a museum with a hidden meaning he wanted to figure out. Your face was still unfamiliar to him, you were still unfamiliar to him, but he had taken such great care of you anyway, even though he didn't know why he felt compelled to do it. He was staring at you as if the answer to all his questions was written there on your face in a code that he just couldn't seem to crack.
