You slowly opened your eyes, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lighting overhead. Everything was blurred and unfamiliar. Your head pounded with pain. Where were you? What happened?
A woman in scrubs came into view.
"How are you feeling?" she asked gently.
"My head... it hurts," you mumbled, your voice raspy. "Where am I?"
Concern flashed across her face. "You're in the hospital, dear. Do you remember what happened?"
You tried to think back, but were met with only blankness. "No, I don't remember anything. Who am I?"
The nurse frowned. "Your name is Y/N. You were in a car accident. It seems you have retrograde amnesia from the trauma to your head. Try not to worry. Your memories may come back in time. For now, focus on resting. I'll let your friend Sana know you're awake."
Friend? Sana? The names meant nothing to you.
As the nurse left, panic rose in your chest. You didn't remember anything—not who you were, how you got here, or even who this Sana person was supposed to be. You struggled to control your rapid breathing, not wanting to alarm the nurses. But inside, you felt utterly lost.
A soft knock came at the door before it opened slowly. A girl peeked in, her eyes widening when she saw you were awake.
"Y/N?" she said tentatively, entering the room fully.
Even in your confused state, you could tell she was beautiful—shiny black hair framing a heart-shaped face, warm brown eyes filled with concern. But you had no idea who she was.
You nodded hesitantly. "That's what they told me my name is."
Her lips trembled as she hurried to your side, taking your hand gently in hers. "I'm Sana. Do... do you remember me at all?"
You shook your head, feeling tears pricking your eyes in frustration. "No, I'm sorry. Everything is just... gone."
Sana sucked in a sharp breath, fighting back her own tears. "It's okay, it will be okay," she soothed, more to herself than you.
She brought your clasped hands to her cheek, closing her eyes for a long moment as if drawing strength. When she opened them again, they shone with determination.
"I'll help you remember. I promise we'll get through this together."
And so began your journey of recovery.
That evening, as you tried to get comfortable in the unfamiliar bedroom, Sana asked softly as she sat on the edge of the bed. "Is there anything I can get you?"
You shook your head. "Just... tell me about us. How we met, became friends, fell in love. Maybe something will feel familiar."
Sana smiled faintly and sat on the edge of the bed. "We've known each other since we were kids. Grew up just down the street from each other. I remember the first day of primary school, when a shy little girl with big eyes caught my attention in class. That was you."
She paused, lost in the memory for a moment before continuing. "We slowly became best friends, did everything together... I had a huge crush on you even back then but was too scared to admit it. We stayed close all through school. Then one day during our last year, I worked up the courage to kiss you at a party. It turned out you felt the same way."
Sana's eyes shone with recounted joy. "We've been inseparable ever since. We went to the same university and got this place together after graduation. Two years ago, I proposed during our vacation in Jeju. You said yes without hesitation."
