(Third person:)
Hatred is a simple and rather straightforward emotion, but one so complicated in both the mind and soul, or maybe it was much more blunt than that. Whatever it was, Catnap certainly had no shortage of hatred, his mind full and swollen with seething hatred from everyone and everything from the past, present, and future. His hatred stemmed from a deep-rooted sense of jealousy for the others; why couldn't he be like them? All he wanted was to fit in with the rest, but he simply didn't.
He was an outcast, a misfit, a snooze-loose loser, and any other self-deprecating adjective he took under his mantle. The small purple feline took his usual spot, sitting by himself in the fake hills of Playcare. Watching the other critters play and teach the children, their smiles made the feline's stomach turn with disgust. Not at them, but at himself; they made it look so easy, so simple. Catnap cursing himself for not being created by the same cloth the others were made from, he longed to have the compassion of Bobby BearHug had, the creativity of Craftycorn, the brains of Bubba Bubbaphant, Hell even the tenacity of kickinchicken. It all made Catnap sick; why couldn't he not have even a smidge of what they had?
He sat and watched with more self-loathing, an aura of negativity practically dripping and flowing all around him. But in his seething hatred, he felt a small paw on his shoulder. This made the feline snap his head to the side the paw was resting on, his white eyes staring daggers into the unfortunate soul that dare touch him.
"What do you want?"
His voice was sharp, clear, and to the point, but immediately, as his gaze turned to meet the soul that touched him, he was shocked. It was the leader himself, Dogday. The rather affectionate dog that seems to always make friends like it was breathing, which made Catnap sickest of them all. Always making friends and meditating peace if conflict arose, he was prefect, too. prefect, Catnap hated it. hate. hate. hate it. Dogday's gaze was soft, but his paw remained strong on his friend's shoulder.
"What troubles you, my friend?"
Catnap sneered and bucked his shoulder to the side to knock off Dogday's hand, and he simply turned his body away and kept tightly hugging his knees.
"Leave me alone; don't you have like a million other people to bother?"
Dogday chuckled lightly as he took a seat beside Catnap, his arms hugging his knees. He copied Catnap's body language, trying his best to remain humorous despite the obvious hostility Catnap was displaying.
"Maybe, but none need my attention more than you right now."
Catnap made a small snort, still giving Dogday his cold shoulder.
"Yeah, sure, like you give an actual damn about me."
The self-doubt and self-loathing made Dogday's brow bend down; he would not allow one of his friends to dare talk down on themselves. So Dogday turned his body over, and he hugged the feline tightly. Catnap felt the arms snake around him, and the feline started to wiggle and squirm. His displeasure was made vocal by his pushing and attempts to try and break away.
"Hey! Get off of me, down boy, down!"
But Dogday didn't stop, determined to cure the disease of sourness in Catnap. His arms now interlock around Catnap's belly, giving him a big squeeze. His face nuzzled the side of Catnap's face, and the feline's nose was instantly swarmed and invaded by the smell of vanilla. But Catnap still fought back against the warm and inviting scent; he would not be fooled by this obvious trick.
"Stop it! This is a prank, isn't it? I don't find it funny!"
Dogday felt a stab of pain in his heart; he was deeply hurt that Catnap thought so lowly of him. This disease, which was Catnap's depression, was much more deeply rooted than he thought. But that wouldn't stop him; with reinforcing vigor, the canine hugged Catnap tighter.
"This isn't a prank; I would never."
Catnap would keep up his struggling for a little longer, till he let out a long, annoyed groan. He decided that if he hugged and played the canine's game, it would end faster. So Catnap's arms would soon be around Dogday, giving him a hug back. His eyes doing a long and dramatic roll.
"Fine, here's your hug, happy?"
Dogday, however, didn't respond, simply holding onto Catnap. Never wavering, and never letting the feline go. only shifting slightly to give the feline soft nuzzles, with his cheek pressing into Catnap.
"Well? Aren't you going to let me go?"
"..."
"Come on, say something!"
But Dogday didn't, choosing to let his actions speak for him. It was brief, even faint, but Catnap felt a twinge of warmth, and his icy and cold heart slowly but surely began to thaw out. That's when the tears began to leak—only one or two. But before Catnap knew what he was doing, he was hugging Dogday tightly and crying into the canine's shoulder. A waterfall of tears streamed down his cheeks and into the dog's bright orange fur, but Dogday didn't seem to mind, simply rubbing and stroking the feline's lower back lovingly. While whispering softly into his ear, assuring him everything would be fine.
"It's ok, let it all out; I'm here for you."
Catnap sniffled and weeped gently, feeling emotions he thought he would never feel. Safety, understanding, and even love. It shook Catnap to his very core; the foundations of his idea of how awful the world was seemed to crack and come tumbling down, leaving him in an emotional and vulnerable state of mind.
Catnap weeped for what seemed like hours, but eventually his tears began to dry. Simply sniffling and now shaking lightly in the warm and inviting embrace of Dogday. It seemed clear why he was associated with the sun; his inviting presence and bubbly demeanor were embodiments of the warm sun itself. Catnap soon started to pull away. Dogday let his arms unwrap around Catnap, and he sat back beside the purple cat. The canine's head tilted a bit to the side.
"Do you feel better?"
Catnap mustered a nod in reply before scooting up closer beside Dogday.
"Can I have another hug?"
Dogday smiled warmly and hugged the feline happily, his eyes closed, and enjoyed the closeness of Catnap. The purple cat seemingly clings to Dogday in response. Feeling much better, his teary eyes now dried up as he held close to Dogday. Emitting a low purr as his forehead was placed against Dogday's.
"You're sweet, you know that?"
Dogday chuckled and matched his forehead with Catnap's.
"I get that a lot."
