I pursed my lips slightly, genuinely surprised, "T-that's totally off topic."

Joshua leaned back in his chair, "I know, but yuh check yuh phone a few seconds ago, an you seemed extremely disappointed. Yuh eyes seh it all. Sere, beyond di advice and di interest in ensuring dat my issues get resolved, your own need fixing. Mi hate fi see yuh inna da state yah."

"Don't worry about it, Josh. Once I finally get through to Elias, I'll try talking things through."

"Suh yuh seh," Joshua replied, raising an eyebrow. "Remember when yuh started dating, mi tell yuh 'Wha sweet a mout' hat a belly,' and yuh neva believe mi."

Joshua chuckled a little as he shook his head.

"It's literally not funny, and don't even bother with the Jamaican Proverbs. I proved you wrong then, and I'll do the same now." I retorted, rolling my eyes.

Joshua laughed again, this time patting my shoulder. "Nuh worry bout dat mi g. Today a yuh birthday suh mi nah guh force dat pon yuh. All mi can tell yuh is dat Elias need fi get a hold a himself cause whateva him a do nuh seem right."

I remained silent, lost in thought, staring at the floor.

"A wah mek yuh suh quiet?"

"Don't worry about it," I mumbled, forcing a smile.

"Cheer up, young lady. Yuh boyfriend might neglect yuh, but I won't," he said boldly. For a second or two, I felt like calling him out for it, but I just stayed quiet; I had no grit to follow up with his words.

He then reached beside his desk, opened his bag and pulled out a square-sized gift wrapped in colorful paper. He held it out to me with a grin.

"Happy birthday again, Sere. May di grace of God be upon you," he declared, pulling me in for a side hug.

"Thank you," I smiled hugging him back.

I then attempted to put the gift on my desk, but he stopped me.

"Why yuh nuh look at it now so I can know if yuh like it or I need to get something else."

"Alright," I responded, my interest clearly sparked.

I carefully removed the wrapping paper as my fingers trembled slightly. Opening the box, I gasped in surprise. It's the Tiffany & Co necklace I've been talking about. I glanced up at Joshua, tears welling in my eyes.

"Did you really have to get it? It's really expensive," I probed, my voice clearly breaking.

"Yuh nuh hear mi a complain bout di price, suh yuh nuh worry bout dat," Joshua Bragged.

"You're unbelievably the best," I muttered, wiping away a tear.

"Mi only a do wah any good friend woulda do,"

"What would I-" Before I could continue, my colleagues arrived. Rushing over to where we were, they shouted. "Happy birthday Serenity!"

They quickly surrounded me, some holding balloons and others holding small gift bags. It was as if, unlike last year, they actually came bearing gifts instead of arriving empty-handed.

"Thanks, everyone!" I said, beaming. "You all didn't have to do this."

"Of course, we did!" one of my colleagues asserted, handing me a brightly colored bag. "You deserve it."

Another colleague nudged Joshua playfully. "You already gave her your present, Josh?"

He grinned. "Obviously."

I laughed, holding up his gift for them to see. "Don't mind him ladies."

Everyone admired the necklace, some gasped and others even inquired about how he got a hold of it. Joshua is pretty much known for being someone who always complained about being broke so for them to see him purchase something so expensive is like a miracle.

"Okay, okay, everyone," our boss's voice boomed as he entered the room, a big smile forming on his face. "Let's get a quick celebration in before we officially start the day off. Sere, happy birthday. We hope it's a fantastic one. Here is a cake from all of us to you."

"Awww...Thank you all once again. I really do appreciate it."

Josh whispered, " It's all a facade."

"Stop, Josh," I muttered, signaling with my eyes toward our colleagues.

He nodded, smiling mischievously.

A few more minutes went by, and we talked a little but then we began preparing for the important meeting we had in a couple seconds.

After finishing everything up, everyone then reported to the conference room but just as I was about to do the same my phone rang.

Glancing at the screen, I saw it was an unknown number. Frowning slightly, I answered, "Hello?"

"Hey Sere," a familiar voice said. It was Elias' friend, Japhet. His voice was unusually sad.

"Japhet? why are you calling me? Is everything okay?"

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I-I can't hide the truth from you anymore. Elias is really sick and in critical condition. You should come to the hospital before it's too late."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "What? What happened to Elias? When? Where is he?"

Japhet's voice strained. "He's at LABH, please hurry."

I could barely manage a response before hanging up. My hands were shaking as I gathered my things. Joshua noticed my distress and rushed over. "Sere, what happened?"

"It's Elias. Something is seriously wrong with him. I have to go to the hospital."

"Calm down," Josh continued. "I'll take you. Let mi grab ma keys, meet mi at di car."

Not wanting to leave abruptly, I stepped into the conference room, trying to compose myself. "Mr. Wellington, I know how important this meeting is and so I really do apologize but I have to go. I have an emergency."

Murmurs filled the room, but I didn't have time to explain. I needed to leave, no matter what.
