If God / Nothing But The Blood (Casey J)

I pursed my lips slightly, genuinely surprised, "T-that's totally off topic."

Joshua leaned back in his chair, "I know, but you checked your phone a moment ago and you seemed extremely disappointed. It's as if you were expecting something but you didn't receive it. I've seen that look before, and it's always because of Elias' actions."

"I-I-it's not-" I spoke up, but I stuttered trying to find the right words

"Serenity, beyond the advice and interest in ensuring that my issues are resolved, doesn't yours also need fixing? I hate seeing you put on a facade."

"I'm not putting on a facade; there is a time and place for everything," I assured him. "Once I finally get through to Elias, I'll try talking things through and I'm sure we'll also resolve our issues."

He sighed, "I vividly remember when you started dating, I reminded you of the Jamaican proverb, 'Wha sweet a mouth' hat a belly'. I had friends who knew what he was like before; a womanizer among many other things. You have to be careful."

"Please do not try to use his past to define what might be going on, Josh," I retorted. "That's totally a condescending. He proved you wrong then, and he'll do the same now.

"I'm sorry if I seemed condescending, but he has been neglecting you and your relationship. Why can't you see that there must be a reason for his behavior?"

"And his reason for doing this is that he might be cheating, right?" I asked sarcastically, but he didn't even pick up on it.

"Yes," He nodded.

I shook my head, "You're so unbelievable."

"Come on, Ser, don't be angry. If I'm wrong, then I'll definitely apologize to both you and him. For now, let's just forget about everything I said. Today is your birthday, so cheer up!"

"You're right, I should cheer up." I mumbled, forcing a smile.

He then reached beside his desk, opened his bag and pulled out a square-sized gift wrapped in colorful paper. He held it out to me with a grin.

"Happy birthday again, Sere. May the grace of God be upon you and may everything you attempt be prosperous," he declared, pulling me in for a side hug.

"Thank you," I smiled hugging him back.

I then attempted to put the gift on my desk, but he stopped me.

"No one is around, so please, please open it now so I can know if you like it, or if I should get the other ones before they go out of stock."

"Alright," I responded, genuinely intrigued.

I carefully removed the wrapping paper as my fingers trembled slightly. Opening the box, I gasped in surprise. It was a custom-made necklace and bracelet set with my name and my favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13, engraved on both sides. I glanced at Joshua, tears welling up in my eyes.

"How did you manage to get this set? I've been unable to get my hands on CP's collection ever since it came out, and somehow you did before it ran out," I hugged him again. "Thank you so much."

"You're welcome, I'm glad you liked it," He smiled once again. "Don't let Stacy know that I told you, but she's planning on surprising you with something big for your birthday as well."

"Aww, you guys are the best," I muttered, wiping away a tear. "I really don't know what I would do without you both."

Josh didn't give an immediate response but instead nudged me and said, "The hive has arrived."

What he actually meant was that our colleagues had arrived. He often referred to them as 'the hive' because of the way they behaved.

"Happy Birthday Serenity!" They all shouted. They quickly surrounded me, holding small gift bags they carried in their hands. Unlike last year, they remembered and actually came bearing gifts.

"Thanks, everyone!" I said, beaming. "You all didn't have to do this."

"Of course, we had to!" one of my colleagues asserted, handing me a brightly colored bag. "You deserve it."

Another colleague nudged Joshua playfully. "So, have you already given her your gift, Josh?"

He grinned. "Obviously."

I laughed, holding up his gift for them to see. "Don't mind him ladies."

Everyone admired the set, some gasped and others even inquired about how he got a hold of it. Joshua is pretty much known for being someone who always complained about being broke so for them to see him purchase anything is like a miracle each year.

"Okay, okay, everyone," our boss's voice boomed as he entered the room, a big smile forming on his face. "Let's get a quick celebration in before we officially start the day off. Sere, happy birthday. We hope it's a fantastic one. Here is a cake from all of us to you."

"Awww...Thank you all once again. I really do appreciate it."

Josh whispered, " It's all a facade."

"Stop, Josh," I mumbled, signaling with my eyes toward our colleagues.

He nodded, smiling mischievously.

A few more minutes went by, and we talked a little but then we began preparing for the important meeting we had in a couple seconds.

After finishing everything up, everyone then reported to the conference room but just as I was about to do the same my phone rang.

Glancing at the screen, I saw it was an unknown number. Frowning slightly, I answered, "Hello?"

"Hey Sere," a familiar voice said. It was Elias' friend, Japhet. His voice was unusually sad.

"Japhet? why are you calling me? Is everything okay?"

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I-I can't hide the truth from you anymore. Elias is really sick and in critical condition. You should come to the hospital before it's too late."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "What? What happened to Elias? When? Where is he?"

Japhet's voice strained. "He's at LABH, please hurry."

I could barely manage a response before hanging up. My hands were shaking as I gathered my things. Joshua noticed my distress and rushed over. "Sere, what happened?"

"It's Elias. Something is seriously wrong with him. I have to go to the hospital.  Please inform Mr. Wellington that I have to leave immediately."

"Calm down," Josh continued. "I'll take you. Let me grab my keys, I'll tell our boss about your emergency and then I'll meet you at the car. Okay?"

I nodded, "okay."
