PART 1

Uzumaki-san

"Dad..."

Hinata stopped short.

Moonstone hued eyes darted around the wooden boardwalk and surrounding beach, certain she'd heard a childish voice threaded through the jovial sound of rowdy beach-goers and tranquil crashing waves. Nothing stood out to her but she didn't move on, tooting herself in place as she listened out again, straining her ears to catch the direction of the frightened call in case there really was a distressed child nearby.

"Dad," the voice sniffled again, "where are you dad..."

She looked down, stepping back to peer through the worn wood beneath her, immediately locating the blonde-haired source of the weeping huddled against one of the support beams holding up the platform.

"I'm...I'm scared..."

She was moving before his next sniffle, retracing her steps back towards the pier-side food court, taking a hard right around the chunky boardwalk rail then carefully navigating her way down the step sandy incline the boardwalk was constructed over. She stumbled on the last stretch, startling the poor boy as her sandals lost traction and she let out a squeak of surprise, nearly losing her strawberry-vanilla swirl ice cream cone in the process in her fight with gravity to remain upright.

They young boy watched her clumsy descent. His big blue eyes wet and red, but one of his blonde brows were raised, his tear-streaked face a physical embodiment of the words 'what the heck are you doing, lady?' if she had ever seen it.

It was a pretty funny expression to see on a child so young, but considering the current circumstances, the embarrassed laugh never slipped past her lips.

Free of the incline and firmly grounded on land, Hinata opened her mouth-

"Are you okay? You almost fell down the hill, dattebasa!"

She blinked, thrown off this his very first question was the very one she'd been about to ask him.

This time, she couldn't help but let loose a small giggle.

The look he gave her next was another 'what the heck lady?'that nearly drew another giggle.

"I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you, I promise," she told him with a bashful smile, stepping closer to his huddle, "it's just, I was going to ask you if you were okay before you asked me. I heard you crying and-"

"I wasn't crying!" the boy denied, wiping his face clear of tears as though she was not only deaf but blind too. Eyes mostly dry, he gave her a pouting frown that was just the right amount of adorable as he wiped his nose with a sandy forearm for good measure.

Pressing her lips together, she hid a smile.

Deja vu.

Hinata knew a thing or two about little kid pride, she didn't have a younger brother but she did have a high-confidence sister five years her junior. Merely suggestion that Hanabi wasn't tough as nails, even if she was caught red handed boo-hoo crying, was liable to goad the short-tempered girl into the mother of all tantrums.

"Oh, I must be hearing thing then, sorry," Hinata played along, closing the distance between them,"well, when I looked down through the boardwalk I saw you down here and thought maybe you were loss and needed help?"
