"...pie."
The word came tumbling onto my pitiful ears like bricks hitting soft ground.
"Huh?"
I turned swiftly to find a wide-eyed woman with a painted smile and an upturned nose staring back at me. I nearly jumped at my own reflection before raising my gaze to the knight in shiny, copper armor.
"You," he said again, though the word came out gruffly before his voice faded into the pitter-patters of raindrops. "I..."
I could feel my cheeks aching as I forced my polite smile to stay upright. "Apologies, Sir, I could not hear you. Do you care to repeat that?"
The giant of a man bowed his head. Did I anger him? I couldn't tell. Not when he had long, messy strands of red hair dripping down into the bloodied beard that took up the majority of his face.
A deep roar of thunder rumbled through my grandmother's bakery as he took a step closer. The broom I held shifted closer before standing directly between the beastly man and me. My reflection's cheeks lit up in his copper armor.
Did knights of Bloomsbury even wear copper? I thought that was meant for the Hunters of the East. Surely, this man didn't come all the way here just for a slice of -
"-pie."
The customer service smile that I so delicately crafted cracked a bit when the cinnamon sweet scent of apples greeted my nose. I didn't even have to look down to find that the man was shoving his plate towards me. Though, I did glance at the cracked plate to find a fork stabbed into the heart of an innocent slice of Apple Pie.
This bastard didn't even take a bite!
I cleared my throat, took a deep breath, and asked with the sweetest voice. "Problem with your dish, Sir?"
The copper giant towering over me jumped as though I did something to hurt him. I raised a brow, my cheery smile finally falling into what Grandma Bett called my signature "witch's sneer." If my simple question scalded him, then surely my expression would send him running back towards the hills of the East...Just like every other man, it seemed.
However, the man didn't turn away. His feet didn't scramble for the exit. Why, he didn't even glance at the door.
Between the streams of red, I found a pair of shimmering blue eyes. They weren't clear like the sky. Or, dingy like the feathers of the blue birds Grandma Bett tended to. No, these eyes mimicked the shimmering seas that I had only seen in my dreams.
And, they were staring directly at me as he said;
"I-I love pie."
