Chapter 2: Claire

A few months ago.

"Claire. You go on the east side. Your partner will be there."

Jenna pointed me in a certain direction. I nodded and started walking. I don't usually ask too many questions. I just act.

I arrived at the east gate of this forest and haven't seen a soul.

"Tara." I called her using the hunter watch.

"Yes, Claire-yyy?" Her chime-like voice resounded.

"Are you sure you guys gave me a partner?"

"Yes. He's actually a good fighter. Why? You still haven't seen him?" She asked as I heard her typing.

"Yea. Not one soul is present here with me."

"You sound like you're ghost hunting.." she mumbled.

"Whatever. I am going inside the gates of hell then."

The gate looked like a hundred wanderers tried to chomp on it. It's broken to it's hinges.

"It's dangerous here." I heard a gentle voice behind me.

I tried so hard to look at the guy behind me and readied myself to hold him down if he comes out as dangerous. He's wearing the same thing as i am wearing, difference is, its a hunter uniform, for men of course.

"Who the hell are you?" I asked as I continued ogling his appearance.

"Xavier."

"You look like a hunter. Are you my partner?" I asked as I walked around him sizing him up.

"Jenna told me I will be meeting my partner for the patrol rounds tonight."

"First name basis with the captain, huh?" I looked at him and noticed his crystal blue irises. It's pretty.

I heard him cough. "We.. have the same age."

"I call her Jenna also. No biggie." I shrugged and started walking deep into the forest.

Trying to focus my attention on the surroundings, I pressed on. I can hear the branches on the ground snapping so I am certain that he is behind me. If i am not sensitive enough, I would say that I can't feel him following me. being one of the three people who are given the rarest of the evol, we needed to live up to the association's expectation, thus they put us together with the elite force.

Keisari Raine, Elize Euphrosyne and me, Claire Mercurie. We monopolized the top line of the hunters. Supports that can't be ignored. We topped every exam the association threw at us. IQ exams, EQ, Physical. Resonance evol users but excellent fighters.

"Xavier." I called him.

he stopped walking and waited for whatever nonsense I would say.

"What's your evol?" I asked him and approached me.

"Light."

"You're a lamp." I blurted out. Trying to stop myself from laughing.

"You can say that." He shrugged. Like he doesn't care if I am teasing him or not.

"What can you do?"

"Whatever the association asks of me."

"Really.." i stood straight as a foul presence makes itself known. "My six o'clock." I instructed. I am amazed that his sword skills is top notch.

A flash of light came and the presence of the monster that is waiting for us quickly faded away. He is strong.

"You've got good instincts, Miss." He looked around. He never loked at me in the face but..

"Let's finish this job. I wanna sleep and drink." I acted nonchallant.

"Doesn't that normally work as drinking first then sleep?" He asked.

"Well, I don't do things the normal way."

My phone rang. I lazily pulled my phone out of my pants backpocket and answered.

"Yep."

Claire Mercurie, stop enjoying and fucking finish the job. I have places to go to.

I have to go to the hospital, Claire.. Please hurry.

The asshole who first spoke was Kei, the gentle voiced girl who spoke next is Elize. They're done patrolling? Keisari's usual partner is our captain.. sometimes me, or Elize. I dont know if she feels sorry for us but, she treats us like her younger sisters.

Kei's a bit.. uncontrollable. Elize would be the workaholic and I am the blacksheep. I do whatever I want. well.. because I can.

"Yep. Were almost done here."

You found your partner?

Elize asked and then I heard Tara in the background.

Please tell Claire to finish up. Everyone is done,

I looked at the man who was waiting for me to move my ass out.

"We are done." then i ended their call. we dont use our hunter's watch if we three are talking. it's much safer that way.

"Why?" he asked and I gave him a questioning look.

"Why what?" I asked back.

"You dont use your hunters watch."

"No fun."

While walking back to the forest entrance, I saw him still looking around.

"Take care." he walked in the opposite direction and I stopped walking to look at him.

"We need to report."

"You can just do your part of the report. I have places that I need to be."

"What?"

he ran off. Back inside the forest.

I shrugged. With his skills, I can say he is strong. maybe stronger than me, Kei and Eli put together.

"Suit yourself."

I started waliking again and saw other hunter's talking to each other. Keisari, Elize, and Tara on one side talking too.

we have this bond, of course, tara is included because she bombed the exams, minus the physical exams.

"Claire!" Tara approached dme and hugged my arm.

"Tara, are we all done for tonight?" I asked and she nodded.

"Everything is done including your report, your combat logs are enough."

"I wanna drink, You coming guys coming with me?" I looked at the three.

"Yeah." Keisari walked towards me and playfully punched my arms.

"You, Elize?" I asked. She looked at me and then looked aat her wristwatch.

"I have my doctor's appointment.."

Understandable.

She scheduled this doctor's appointment for months.

"Take care, okay?"

"You coming, Tara?"

she shook her head. "I need to take everything to Captain Jenna befor midnight."

"She's.." I stopped myself from saying anything.

Tara smiled. "It's my job."

"Yeah. Yeah." Keisari shrugged her shoulders and answered a call.

Just fucking stay put on your damn studio!

I went for my bike and with a set destination in mind, I sped off the forest and into Linkon's city center.
