8. Lay you down

Assignment gathering on Friday at Tara's house went without any close or heated encounters - they behaved like they did in school, friendly and at a distance - because Tara's housemates were present and they would individually pop up in Tara's room to "check on them". So, even with obvious tension between the two, neither Chris nor Tara could make any moves, especially since they haven't told anyone what happened between them these previous couple of days... Though everyone already suspected.

They couldn't even do anything on the weekend...

Saturday was reserved for a party at some random frat house which Tara attended and Chris (obviously) didn't while Sunday, when they were at Chris's house, their assignment was now interrupted by Hyunjin and other boys of the house.

They were almost done with the project when Monday rolled by.

"How about we play a video of the Great Barrier Reef while I talk about it?" Tara suggested that Monday afternoon when they met in her room for the final preparations. She sat at the desk while Chris remained seated on the bed, creating a safe distance between them.

"Oh, I like that," Chris nodded, noting the idea down in his notebook. "I'll look for a 4K video and download it."

"Would you two like some lemonade?" Suzy peeked into the room, her interruption making Tara roll her eyes and grunt.

"Yes, thank you," Chris smiled at the blonde girl and she came inside, carrying a tray with two glasses of lemonade.

"Suzy..." Tara smiled through gritted teeth. Her best friend innocently blinked. "Don't you have to prepare for your presentation, hm?"

"Oh, Matt and I finished it," Suzy beamed a smile.

"Then, please let us finish ours. Thank you for the refreshments."

Suzy bowed (Tara frowned at her racist joke) and left the room.

Tara waited for several seconds after Suzy closed the door before speaking. "So, how should we conclude the presentation?"

"Would you like some sandwiches?"Kyla, Tara's other housemate, opened the door and Tara clenched her jaw to compose herself.

"No, thank you," Tara replied with a fake smile and curly-haired Kyla nodded before closing the door.

Another ten seconds of silence passed before Tara sighed in defeat.

"Do you think they know?" Chris asked carefully.

"Knowing them... they do," Tara sighed again. "Even though I didn't tell them anything..."

"Hyunjin and the guys too..." Chris shook his head.

Tara sighed again and turned in her chair to type on her laptop. "Let's get this over with before I commit murder."

Chris agreed and they went into their work mode, finishing the digital presentation and saving it on Chris's flash drive when the night had already fallen.

Tuesday was the geography assignment D-day. Each couple had 10-15 minutes to present their work, going in the order written on their drawing lots. And since Chris and Tara were number 25, they had to sit through a lot.

But when it was their turn, Chris's anxiety returned, conscious of everyone's stares. He had a feeling every person in class knew what he and Tara did (even though it was just a couple of makeout sessions).

Tara began the presentation to break the ice and would often smile at Chris to ease his nerves and encourage him to present after her.

The teacher loved it when they used videos and pictures but loved Chris's facts on Australia, the points one couldn't find in regular schoolbooks. As expected, gave them an excellent grade.
