Chapter One

It all started on Saturday evening, February 14.

Alexia was at Noah's house - or, actually his father's ranch, where he stays during the weekends while his father is usually in the backyard tending to the animals -for dinner, just like every other Saturday evening. Except unlike the other evenings, today was Valentine's Day. The first Valentine's Day when not both of them were single. The first Saturday evening when someone other than themselves were eating dinner together at Noah's house.

That "someone" was Kayla, Alexia's girl best friend and Noah's girlfriend. Alexia herself had gotten the two together, and she felt proud, especially after knowing that Kayla had had a crush on Noah for two whole years ever since she moved to Brooklynn Middle School in 6th grade. But, and she would be too nice to admit this out loud to her girl best friend's face, she didn't exactly like that Kayla was joining in on the whole Saturday evening tradition. Sure, it was only once, but still. It was for Alexia and Noah, and for Alexia and Noah only.

So you could understand why Alexia got sort of angry at Kayla when she locked herself up in an empty room with Noah, shutting Alexia out.

So you could understand why Alexia ran outside into the backyard in tears of frustration and fury, past Noah's father, over the fence that bordered their territory, through fields and fields of tall grass, towards the familiar hills that she and Noah usually sat on together facing the sunset. Except not today. Today, Alexia was alone, sitting on a hilltop, watching the sunset rays bleed across the sky, feeling depressed.

She sat there for a long while, laying on her back, feeling unshed tears in her eyes. She sat there, watching as the sun slowly climbed down the sky.

"It's going to disappear soon," she muttered bitterly, "and Noah is making out with Kayla, not having a freaking care in the world." She clenched her fists. "This is all Kayla's fault! If she had never-"

She didn't get to finish, for she was suddenly swept up from the ground by strong arms.

Alexia screamed, pounding on the back of the creep who had picked her up. "Who are you?!?!?! LET ME GO, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"No need to attract attention to yourself, jeez." The arms let go of her, letting her drop to the ground.

Alexia's mouth dropped as she realized who it was. Those familiar green eyes, the familiar neatly gelled blonde hair.

"Noah!" She threw her arms around him. "You're here!"

"You know I wouldn't miss watching the sunset with my best friend." He winked.

Alexia shrugged, laying back down on the hilltop, gazing out into the distance. "I don't know. You seemed to be pretty happy when Kayla trapped you in that room. Did you have fun making out with her? Hmm?!" She paused. "Sorry. I'm just...kind of pissed at her. First she barges into our alone Saturday dinner tradition, then she just steals you from me." She sighed.

"Alexia." Noah, laid down beside her, propped himself up by one elbow so that he was facing her. "Are you sure you weren't...you know...jealous?"

"Why would I be jealous?" Alexia asked. "You're my best friend. Of course I would never want to date you. Besides, I made you and Kayla get together. That doesn't make any sense."

"Wasn't that a while ago when you got me and her together though? Like...one, maybe two, months? Things can change over that course of time. Your feelings can change."

"No. I don't like you. I can't like you. At least, not in that way."

"If you say so," Noah said, unsure, laying back down on his back.

Alexia turned her head to the side to face him. "But I know one thing. I love you. As a best friend." She gave him a hug.

His arms instinctively around her waist. "Love you too." He smiled at her as they just stayed in that position, hugging each other kind of awkwardly while laying on the ground.

"So, uh, you can let go of me now..." Alexia muttered.

"No, I'm good." Noah smirked.

Alexia was fine with this position also, so they just stayed there, Noah looking at Alexia's eyes while she was trying to avoid eye contact. But she made the mistake of looking up and was immediately caught in Noah's jade-colored eyes.

She didn't know what came over her. Was it the romantic feeling of laying on a hilltop, arms wrapped around each other, "watching" the sunset? Was it Noah's beautiful green eyes? Was it the way he stared at her, making her feel all tingly? It was a mystery.

But she knew one thing for sure - they kissed, and she had fallen, hard.
