Carina paces the lockerroom anxiously, her mind racing with worry. She can't shake the nagging feeling that something is wrong with Maya, her partner and the love of her life. Maya's recent behavior has been concerning, and Carina can't ignore the signs any longer.
Maya enters the lockerroom, a tired smile on her face as she greets Carina. But Carina can see the strain in Maya's eyes, the hint of exhaustion that lingers beneath the surface. The Clinic day was stressfull and she had a headache.
CARINA:
Maya, can we talk?Maya's smile fades, replaced by a look of concern as she takes in Carina's serious expression. She nods, gesturing for Carina to take a seat at the bench infront of her locker.
MAYA:
Of course, what's on your mind?Carina takes a deep breath, preparing herself for the conversation ahead. She knows it won't be easy, but she can't ignore her instincts any longer.
CARINA:
I've noticed something... off, lately. During the incident with Chief Ross, you didn't seem to hear her instructions, even though you were right next to her. And yesterday, when I called for diapers, you didn't react at all.Maya's expression shifts from concern to defensiveness, her jaw clenching as she braces herself for Carina's accusations.
MAYA:
I heard Chief Ross just fine, Carina. And as for the diapers, the drill was super loud.Carina shakes her head, frustration evident in her voice as she tries to get through to Maya.
CARINA:
Maya, this isn't about one incident. It's about a pattern of behavior that's been going on for weeks now. You've been distracted, unfocused. It's not like you. We just came back to a good place, you are going to therapy whats going on?Maya's defenses start to crumble, her mask slipping as she struggles to maintain her composure. She needed to be honest. She didn't want Carina to think she was slipping mentaly again.
MAYA:
I... I don't know what's wrong, Carina. But I've had a hard time understanding people lately. It so embaressing, but also super anoying. My head has been throbbing, and sometimes I hear this ringing in my ears that won't go away.Carina's heart lurches at Maya's words, her worry intensifying as she realizes the seriousness of the situation.
CARINA:
Why didn't you tell me? How long is this going on?Maya shrugs, her voice barely above a whisper as she avoids Carina's gaze.
MAYA:
I didn't want to worry you. And i was embaressed. And I thought maybe it would go away on its own. For a few weeks. I've had it before after an incident a few years ago. But now it just came and its so anoying.Carina reaches out, taking Maya's hand in hers and squeezing it gently.
CARINA:
Maya, you don't have to go through this alone. We're a team, remember? Whatever happens, we'll face it together.Maya's eyes brim with tears, her defenses crumbling as she leans into Carina's embrace.
MAYA:
I'm scared, Carina. What if it's something serious? What if i can't be a firefighter anymore if this comes out?Carina wraps her arms around Maya, holding her close as she whispers words of comfort and reassurance.
CARINA:
We won't know until we get you checked out. But whatever it is, we'll deal with it together. I promise.Maya nods, her heart heavy with fear and uncertainty.
Maya sits nervously in the doctor's office, her heart pounding with apprehension as she waits for the results of her hearing tests. Carina sits beside her, holding Maya's hand in a tight grip, offering silent support as they await the doctor's arrival.
The doctor enters the room, a sympathetic smile on her face as she takes a seat opposite Maya and Carina.
DOCTOR:
Maya, I've reviewed the results of your hearing tests, and I'm afraid there's no easy way to say this. You have experienced a significant degree of hearing loss in both ears.Maya's heart sinks at the doctor's words, her worst fears confirmed in an instant. She feels Carina's hand tighten around hers, offering silent reassurance in the face of Maya's distress.
MAYA:
How... how is that possible? I'm too young for this to be happening. The doctor nods sympathetically, her gaze filled with compassion as she explains Maya's condition.
DOCTOR:
There are many factors that can contribute to hearing loss, Maya. It's possible that prolonged exposure to loud noises or other environmental factors may have played a role. Firefighters are prone to loose heating early. But the important thing now is to focus on finding a solution that works for you.Maya's mind reels with the implications of the doctor's words. She can't imagine navigating her life without the ability to hear properly, without the sounds of the world around her filling her senses with life and vitality.
CARINA:
What... what are our options?Carina's voice is barely above a whisper, her own anxiety palpable as she considers the impact of Maya's diagnosis on their lives together.
DOCTOR:
Fortunately, there are treatments available that can help manage your hearing loss. In your case, I would recommend considering a hearing aid. With the right device and proper adjustments, you may be able to regain some of your hearing and improve your quality of life.Maya's heart clenches at the thought of needing a hearing aid. It feels like a tangible reminder of her body's betrayal, of the ways in which she is slowly being robbed of her senses.
MAYA:
But... but what about my job? How will I be able to do my job effectively if I can't hear properly? The doctor offers Maya a reassuring smile, her tone gentle as she addresses Maya's concerns.
DOCTOR:
Many people with hearing loss are able to continue working successfully with the help of assistive devices and accommodations. We can work together to find solutions that will allow you to perform your duties safely and effectively.Maya nods, her mind racing with questions and fears. But as she looks into Carina's eyes, she finds strength and solace in the unwavering love and support that surrounds her.
MAYA:
Okay... okay, let's do it. Let's get the hearing aids.Carina squeezes Maya's hand tightly, her heart filled with pride and admiration for her partner's courage in the face of adversity.
CARINA:
We'll figure this out together, Maya. I promise.
