One of the benefits of living with Evelyn was that Ben no longer had to barely make it to the bus stop on time. It was thirty minutes faster and safer for a driver to deliver him to school and retrieve him as well.
Evelyn and I were arguing over my walking to work, obviously making no progress. She had her hands on her hips, slightly out of breath from her morning run. Her lips parted while she caught her breath.
"Nothing is easy with you, is it?" Her own frustration steamed off of her body as her chest rose and fell heavily. We were close, only a few inches separating us as we stood in the middle of her kitchen.
"It's wasteful and unnecessary. I've been fine walking. Nothing has ever happened. This is just another one of Nicolas' poor attempts to get me back. If you have me driven to work, he wins." I folded my arms, something relatively attractive occurred as her body closed the space between us.
My back pressed against the kitchen island had my composure weakening. There was nowhere left to run as her arms barricaded me into submission.
"And if something does happen to you, what should I do with myself? I think about you enough already." Evelyn's eyes were heavenly sculpted, molding me into someone weak as her breath touched my skin.
"I'll be fine." My voice wavered underneath her intense presence.
"I know you will because I'm going to protect you. For Ben's sake, he needs you so much more than you think." Evelyn's voice was soft and then she was pulling away from me, sipping a cup of coffee and walking away.
I could hear her disappearing down the hallway, closing the door to her bedroom behind her.
Then she was winning, sending me the contact information for my driver whose name was Charles. I'd encountered him on several occasions as he was Evelyn's fondest chauffeur. He was always polite and smiling from soft wrinkled eyes.
I couldn't even properly sulk in my defeat because Ben was running full speed down the hallway, nearly knocking over beautifully detailed sculptures.
I grabbed his arm, "Uh uh. Slow it down. I can't replace anything in here. You break it, you buy it."
Ben was grinning, checking the depth of his pockets momentarily before shrugging, "Do you think she takes hugs as a form of payment?"
Evelyn's presence was subtly flooring me as she returned to the kitchen in a white button up. Her eyes never touched mine or Ben's as she sipped from her coffee, "No. She doesn't."
He was smiling mischievously, creeping up behind her whilst she became highly aware of his presence. As soon as Evelyn turned around, Ben was wrapping his little arms around her waist, pressing his head against her stomach.
It was probably the only time I'd ever seen her caught off guard. Evelyn raised her brows ever so slightly. Genuinely, she didn't know what to do. Her eyes lingered on the top of his head and then found mine briefly before setting her coffee down.
She was bringing her hand up gently patting his head while he lingered in the embrace. If I wasn't so amused, I would've found my phone for a proper picture. Ben pulled away from her, his smile somewhat contagious as he beamed brighter than the sun.Evelyn was glancing at her coffee, somewhat relieved by his release as she ran her fingertips through her hair.
"Hungry?"
