We were sitting on the patio, Evelyn's button-up unfastened all the way down. She was sitting on the rug beside me, staring at the world with something distant behind her eyes.
Her skin was luminous under soft patio lights and I found myself at a complete loss of words as I studied her. She was leaning back against the palms of her hands, the breeze had her hair blowing away. She tossed it with her fingertips and brought that crystal glass to her lips.
There was dissonance behind her expression. Genuinely, she seemed rather defeated. I felt alive when she looked at me.
Her eyes were calm. A faint strain against them as she parted her lips, "Come here."
I did. She had her hands on the small of my back as I straddled her waist. Evelyn was leaning back against the patio furniture, her eyes seemed to be buried in mine.
She pressed her mouth against my collarbone and whispered, "I don't want you to worry."
"I don't want you to depend on your father." I had my hands against her face. Her skin was so soft as I trailed them down her neck. She tensed briefly before leaning into my touch.
"I won't. Don't concern yourself with any of this. Consider it already handled. Tell me about your day." Her voice was a tell that she wanted to lighten the mood.
"There's not much to tell. We were busy. People stare at me now. Because of you." I teased her.
She grinned, "Maybe they stare because you're beautiful."
I thought about it momentarily, "No. They stare because you own half of London."
Evelyn was innocently nonchalant, "Forty-six percent."
"Or you're just that good at your job." She suggested.
I narrowed my eyes at her, "I'm on the front cover of several magazines. We have journalists in the lobby that wait for me to go on break."
Evelyn stifled a laugh. It started in her eyes, threatening to spill out of cherry-coloured lips, "That's terrible."
"That's all you have to say for yourself, Miss Hawthorne?" I was leaning into her, thrilled by the subtle anticipation of her next words.
She leaned towards me and slowly parted her lips, "A small price to pay for sitting in my lap, wouldn't you agree?"
I was rolling my eyes, unable to hide my own amusement, "The ego on you billionaires is quite impressive."
Her hands fell down my back until she was grabbing my ass, pulling me closer. Her mouth covered my collarbone once more sending chills down the entirety of my spine.
"Humble me then."
I was remembering my unpleasant encounter with Theresa in the break room.
"Theresa kissed me today."
Evelyn was still for a moment. Her eyes touched mine with a sparked curiosity, "Yeah? How was it?"
"Depressing."
Her mouth was a grin, there was subtle confidence lingering behind her eyes as her hands roamed my inner thighs. I felt my breath hitch as she squeezed, "A depressing kiss; that's supposed to humble me?"
