"I don't care if he's a foot taller than me," Liam said, glaring a Brett across the field. He turned back to Aspen and Mason, a determined glimmer in his eyes. "I think I can take him."
Mason nodded silently, pinching his lips together as he admired the tall, curly-haired teenager as he pulled a shirt over his head. "Yeah.."
"What do you think you're doing?" Liam questioned, noticing not one, but both of his friends' gazes on the Devenford Prep. player.
Mason jumped. "What? Me?" He nodded. "Agreeing with you. Being agreeable."
Liam rolled his eyes. "You guys think he's hot, don't you?"
Mason shook his head. "No! No, not at all.. Right, Aspen?" She shrugged.
"He's a little hot.."
"Maybe.. Yeah. Definitely."
Liam sighed loudly. "He wants to destroy me."
Mason clapped him on the shoulder. "I think you could definitely take him.. And then give him to me."
Liam laughed half-heartedly at him, his friends laughing along. "Nah, just.. Go out there and kick their smug prep school butts," Mason encouraged, giving him a playful shove before retreating up into the bleachers.
Aspen watched him go before turning back to Liam, holding uncomfortably onto her elbow. "I just.. I don't think you'll need it," she admitted quietly, "But.. Uh.." Lifting herself up onto her toes half an inch to press her lips to his cheek quickly, before swiftly backing away. "Good luck."
Liam's cheeks heated up upon contact with her lips, a dark red blush dusting them. "Uh.. T-thanks.." He smiled at her and she smiled back, their eyes locking. Aspen looked away from him subconsciously.
"Hey, Liam! Think fast!"
Brett's voice echoed across the field as a white lacrosse ball sailed straight for Aspen's head. She sucked in a sharp breath, but Liam's hand shot out, grabbing it just before it could hit her. He pulled it away from her face, a small smirk on his face. Aspen spotted Coach and Scott talking a few feet away. Coach nodded appreciatively.
"Oh, he plays."
The teams were called for starting line-ups and Aspen snuck away to sit on the players' bench, mindful of Scott's warning to stay close.
A few minutes into the game, and Liam had already gotten slammed into by Brett. The referee called it and Stiles lined his stick up with a large, impossibly hairy teenager. When the whistle was blown, he scooped up the ball and tossed it to Kira.
"Go Kira!" he yelled.
Coach started yelling for Kira to pass, but she didn't seem to care as she made way for her open shot. She tossed the ball easily into the net after dodging the several Devenford players.
Coach blew his whistle. "Yukimura! Get over here!"
The kitsune frowned, jogging over and pulling off her helmet. "Take a seat," Finstock said, "You're benched for the rest of the game."
Kira's grin fell. "What? Why?"
Coach shrugged. "You didn't pass." Kira scoffed. "B-but.. I had an open shot."
Coach rolled his eyes. "The play was for you to pass. This is a scrimmage, it's about teamwork, Yukimura. So, you're benched."
Kira opened her mouth, about to say something else, but Aspen shook her head behind Coach's back. She sighed in defeat and sat down beside Aspen.
The game proceeded until Brett and Liam collided a final time, Garrett stuck in the middle. The whole team swarmed around them and Aspen stood up, along with Kira, to see what was happening. A sigh of relief left her lips when she saw Liam standing and talking to Scott and Stiles.
"What happened?" Kira asked, standing on the tips of her toes to look over the crowd, "Are they okay?"
Aspen nodded. "Liam's fine.. Brett.. Not so much."
They watched as two medics carried him off of the field on a stretcher.
Minutes later, Scott, Stiles, and Liam joined them. "I talked to Coach," Liam said, "I'm out for the rest of the game.. What are you gonna do?"
Scott shook his head. "I-I don't know.. Something's still not right.. We're missing something."
Stiles held up his phone, saying, "Guys, Lydia just broke another third of the list."
Liam looked panicky at him. "Am I on it?" Stiles shook his head. "No, but someone else is.." He pinched the screen, zooming in on a particular name:
Brett Talbot
