“AUGUST ELIZABETH GRIMKE WHAT IN THE LORDS NAME IS ON YOUR BACK?!” My mom yelled. Oh shit, my shirt must have rose up when I was hugging dad. Quickly I released myself from my dad’s hug and pulled my shirt down.

“Um nothing. Ha what are you talking about mom?” Faking confusion along with a fake laugh.

“You know what I’m talking about! I saw something shiny on your back! Care to explain young lady?”

You know what the sad thing is; she didn’t even give me time to explain. She turned me around and ripped my shirt up.

“What is that?! Are those piercings in your ba- Oh my god she has tattoo- Oh my she has her sides pierced to! OH MY MORE TATTOOS!” Mom yelled. Well it was more like yelling and gasping for breath.

Okay so I had my back dimples pierced, and two nautical star tattoos on my lower back. Along with my hips pierced and two other nautical stars on my hips. I don’t think she was ready for the other tattoos yet… Well with how she reacted with those.

“Mom its nothing, just a few tattoos and pierc-“

“Oh its nothing? ITS NOTHING? AUGUST YOU BRANDED YOUR BODY!” She cut me off “Wilbur do you see this?! This is why I didn’t want her to go off to New York!” She rambled on and on. Me and dad just stared at her when she was on her little rants. I heard my siblings snickering as they watched the whole scene.

“Olive calm down. Babe it’s not even that bad.” Dad tried to calm her down, but she only shot daggers at him. “At least she didn’t get them when she was a teenager.”

Apparently my brothers and sisters found this hilarious and busted out into fit of laughter. Both my parents looked at me, all I did was look around the room, as if it was so interesting.

My dad blew out a breath, shaking his head. “Oh August.”

Meanwhile mom shot daggers at me. I was cracking under the pressure.

“Alright fine! I got my first tattoo when I was 16! There I said it!” Shaking my head like I was embarrassed of myself. “Mom that guilt has been eating me up inside since the day I got it.” Putting a hand over my heart my voice filled with mock guilt. A smile present on my face. Apparently she didn’t care about my nose pierced – the one everyone can see – but she cared if I got something that no one can see.

I watched mom as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Are there any more I need to know about?”

Sucking the air between my teeth, clapping my hands “We’ll talk about that a little later. SO how’s everyone been?” Quick to change the subject.

“Don’t think this isn’t over August. We are talking about this later.” Moms voice was firm. Yeah she was going to forget all about it till I did something else wrong.

“Aunty Penguin!” Looking down I saw Elliot with his arms raised.

“Elli!” Picking him up and putting him onto my hip. That when I got a good look at him.

“Holy shit he looks just like Trent!” I got a little closer in his face, causing him to giggle. “Now that’s just creepy.” I mumbled more to myself than the others. Suddenly I felt pressure in my leg, looking down to find Dakota poking me.

“Come here bud.” Putting him on my other hip. “And you my handsome little devil look just like your mommy.”

“I’m not handsome?” Elliot said in a small voice.

“Of course you are.”

“More than Uncle Trent?”

“Of course! You are way better looking than him! Honestly I think Uncle Trent is the most ugliest son of a bi-“
