"Mom, how come you've had a pen pal for nearly a year and you haven't mentioned a word to us about it?" I asked my mother later that night after he had eaten dinner with us and drifted off to bed. "Is Maui someone dad should be worrying about?"
"What?" my mother laughed. "Maui? No, no, no. Maui doesn't really swing that way."
"What do you mean?" I asked, even though I knew what she meant. I just couldn't believe it. I just had to be sure.
"He's gay," my mom confirmed. Oh my god. The butterflies went crazy down there in my tummy. I tried to ignore it.
