Under the floorboards

Yearning to take me away
WAITING
I shift in my cramped home
I can hear
The rats
And Cécile's
Neighbors
Moving around under my feet
Coats in front of me
Behind the door
Sits a Jew
Me
Just waiting
For Cécile to bring food
FEAR
The door squeaks open
And for a momentI freeze
Who is it?
What if they find me?
What will I do?
Will Cécile get hurt?
And then a woman's voice
Hey Morsi, are you
Guarding our guest well?
Followed by a soft purr
I let out a sigh
CATS AND RATIONS
The closet door creaks open,followed by the secret wall being removed
Cécile sits in front of me
With a grim look
And holds out a basket
This is all for the week,
We have to
Save it
I nod slowly and swallow
Can I have some water, at least?
The young woman nods
And stands up
Morsi slinks into
My little apartment
And purrs
