21. CHECKMATE
(A/N: This chapter is written in the third person's POV.)
Today is Friday, and it is the day that Mason and Parker's contract ends. Parker was looking forward to this day that she set a reminder on her phone and at exactly 6:30 in the morning, her phone vibrated on her nightstand, reminding her of what an auspicious and remarkable day it is today.
She groaned as she grabbed the phone on the nightstand and brought it to her face. She looked at the screen and got up immediately, screaming her lungs out in the process. Her parents came rushing upstairs, thinking that she was in some sort of trouble.
"Parker, honey!" Eric knocks on the door, "Is everything okay in there? Look whoever you are, we come in peace and we are unarmed. Please leave our daughter alone! If you want money, we'll give it to you! Okay, we're coming in now!"
Eric kicks the door open, and they both jump into the room.
"Honey, are you okay?" Katherine asks, holding a pan in her hands.
So much for being unarmed.
"Woah woah woah!" Parker remarks, looking shocked.
"Where is he?" Eric asks.
"Who?" Parker asks.
"The burglar." Katherine says.
"Burglar? What are you guys talking about? And what's with the pan mom?" Parker asks.
"Well, we heard you screaming, so we thought someone broke in!" Eric says.
"No one broke into my room, I'm fine." Parker says.
"Oh," Katherine lowers the pan.
"Parker, don't scare us like that." Eric says.
"Sorry dad.." Parker says.
"It's okay, honey." Eric says.
"Well, at least share the good news with us! What's making you scream out loud so early in the morning?" Katherine says.
"Yeah, honey, what's going on?" Eric asks.
"Well, today is the day..." Parker stops after she realizes that she was about to tell her parents that today is the day that her contract with Mason - who is currently their favorite person in the world - ends.
"Today is the day..." Katherine asks.
"The day Mason was born. Yeah, today is Mason's birthday." Parker says.
"What? No way! Tell him I said happy birthday!" Eric says.
"Yeah, me too." Katherine says.
"Will do." Parker says.
"Well, do you two have any plans tonight? If you don't, then maybe you can invite him over for dinner. I'll cook something nice and we can all celebrate with you and your boyfriend." Katherine says.
"He's not my boyfriend mom." Parker says.
"Yet. He's not your boyfriend yet." Kathrine says.
