DESPITE MAVIS EXPLICITLY SAYING to her father that she didn't want nor need any more friends, he took it upon himself to invite Daniel in whenever he got the chance. At first, she thought that her dad wanted to set her up with a nice boy-next-door type, though she quickly realized that Carlos just wanted to look out for her. So, the dynamic duo of Mavis and Dara quickly became a trio.
"So, Halloween, right? I'm thinking we watch the actual Halloween movie because I just love Jamie Lee Curtis so much," Dara ranted while laying sideways on Mavis' bed. Daniel sat on Mavis' carpeted floor, flipping through a teen magazine that she didn't even remember owning. "I might dress up as Michael for the school party."
"I'm not going to that so it doesn't really matter what you go as," Mavis said. Dara shook her head sadly and looked at Daniel.
"You're not going? Why?" He asked. "I would have thought you'd come to something like that. Obviously it's lowkey if it's at a school."
"Have you ever pictured me at anything? I only went to freshman year homecoming and then didn't bother to come to anything after that shit show," Mavis ranted to Daniel with a glare. Dara thought back on the fateful day when a senior had thrown a water balloon at her that was meant for his girlfriend who had been cheating on him. Dara's red dress had gotten soaked and the dance hadn't even begun. Plus, She'd discovered Tommy's antics the night before, so she was already having a bad track record. "Something bad always happens. I'm just bad luck."
"That can't be completely true. I mean, maybe it's over!"
"I don't think the curse will break until after graduation. . . " Dara trailed off sadly. Daniel pretended to be shocked at a headline from two years prior that said something about a celebrity he didn't know who lost weight. "Would you even walk?"
"Well, I don't think I can get out of that one," Mavis said while she thought about it. "I think I might get booed off the stage or dragged by one of those comically large hooks."
"After that girl spread the rumors about you at Johnny's party that might actually happen." Mavis quickly shut Dara up, not wanting to think about the night at his house any longer. Daniel also never liked talking about the boy he still had an ongoing rivalry with, which Dara seemed to forget.
Since the party, Dara had begun obsessing over The Beatles, started saying 'peace and love' every time she left a room, and accidentally added onto outrageous rumors started about Mavis and Johnny. The following week at school, Ali's gossipping friend started a rumor that Mavis was swooping in on Johnny. What had Dara done? She said that all they were doing was having a free therapy session together. Then people started asking Mavis in the halls whether Johnny was a romantic or not. She had to yell at them that no, Johnny had not told her one of his sob stories and yes, she was still uninterested in high school boys.
