JOHNNY DROVE IN SILENCE, other than the sound of his engine and the tires against the gravel. Mavis gripped tightly to his red leather jacket when he hit a bump, trying not to think about how firmly his body felt underneath her fingers. Instead, she thought earnestly about how expensive the bike, his jacket, and his expensive shoes must have cost. She was glad he didn't try to talk to her. Mavis didn't feel like fraternizing with him that night. She could tell Johnny wished to ask her questions, though he stopped himself from saying anything more than telling her to 'hang on' when he made a tight turn. He did it on purpose, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of letting him know she was scared.

Mavis St. James didn't enjoy letting people know she had fears. If she placed them in the back of her mind, pretended they were non-existent, and put on a straight face, no one would ever know.

"Where is it you live again, St. James?" Johnny called out her her, making her flinch from how loud he was after the silence.

"You know where. It's the shitty building in Reseda. The complex," She clarified. Johnny had to know how different their lives were. The Lawrence boy lived with his mother and stepfather in a mansion over in the Hills. It was nowhere close to where Mavis lived, and it reminded her of how different some of her classmates were to her, not that she let it get to her.

"It's not like I go out biking around here with Bobby or Dutch," Johnny said sarcastically. Mavis clicked her tongue at him. Mavis noticed another figure off in the distance on a bike of his own.

Daniel LaRusso was off in his own world, not drawing much attention to himself so far besides Mavis. She told herself she wasn't doing him a favor or anything by not alerting Johnny to his presence

"LaRusso lives here too, doesn't he?" Johnny asked, making her eyes widen.

"What does that matter to you? Gonna start making just as much of a fool of me as you do to him?"

"I don't think anyone could make a fool out of you, St. James. You don't let them close enough to." His words got nothing but more silence out of her. She heard him sigh. "I saw him biking, you know."

"For his sake I really hope I'm not seeing your friends attempting to run him off the road right now," Mavis mumbled. He turned his head without fully facing her.

"In that case, you're hallucinating." She groaned, slapping his shoulder.

"Just drop me off on the corner." She felt his body shake as he laughed at her reaction.

"No more fighting about leaving your friend alone?" He emphasized the word friend, knowing that it would get to her. Everyone knew that Mavis didn't really do friends.

"Not on good terms right now. I basically used him to try and get back at Bobby for being a little shit and wasting my time." When she said it out loud to a person like Johny, she felt a bit of regret in her heart.
