MAVIS FILLED UP HER WATER BOTTLE with haste, shoving it into the side pocket of her backpack and thinking to herself before throwing in some fruit snacks as well.
"Come on Maeve, you can't be late again," Her dad scolded her, practically shoving her out the door, handing her a paper bag. Mavis sighed, seeing that she'd forgotten to pack her lunch again. Her father, always a good man, had packed it for her because he knew her so well.
Mavis opened the door and nearly screamed, seeing the new kid who'd gotten a beat down from Johnny Lawrence standing there with a meek smile on his face. She could see the black and blue bruise peeking out from behind his glasses.
"Dad, this is the new kid next door who you wanted me to hang out with," Mavis explained, causing her dad to smile widely and pull Daniel in for a handshake, surprising him.
"Oh great! I'm surprised she took my advice! Nice to meet you, Daniel. I'm Mavis' dad, Carlos." Daniel nodded awkwardly.
"I don't really know anyone yet, so I was hoping we could bike to school together. I saw yours out front." He gestured to her blue bike that caused her to cringe. Mavis didn't like meeting new people and then actually having to hang out with them. it wasn't anything against Daniel, she just didn't particularly care for him. "Unless your friend is already planning on that."
"Dara doesn't live here. We just hang out after school together," Mavis told him with her eyes narrowed into an unreadable expression.
"Cool!"
"Yeah. Sure, Daniel, I can show you the ropes."
She was hoping to get Daniel LaRusso off her case, considering she had enough on her plate already. She let him do all the talking on the way to school, barely acknowledged him, and played music she didn't think he would like to drown him out. When there was an awkward silence where Daniel didn't know what to say, she didn't bother saying anything to fill it.
"So . . . what clubs are you in?" Her asked her curiously. She turned to him and rolled her eyes when she saw him looking at the kids driving their fancy cars to school.
"Political science," She deadpanned, biking across the street during a pause in traffic and causing a nervous Daniel to try catching up.
"Oh, that's cool. I didn't know they had that here. That seems more like a college-y type club," He rambled. She motioned for him to go left on the sidewalk, and he followed behind her on his bike.
"Yeah, I started it my sophomore year. There's only eight of us." Some girl that Mavis didn't know who was clearly an underclassmen barely moved out of the way in time before Mavis would have bulldozed over her. "There's pretty much only sports here and some other weird clubs. And yearbook, of course. Dara's in that, so if you wanna join you'll know someone."
