Visiting the cabin

The air in the car is suffocating. Ashley and Jacob just got into a huge fight in front of the entire group. No one says anything because they don't want to piss Jacob off more. Everybody knows how Jacob gets when he's mad. His eyes don't go red and his voice never raises. But his face changes to a point where you can't recognize him. All of us try to avoid that part of him except for Caleb.
"So why were you texting her Jacob?" Caleb asks.
"Stop instigating," Jacob says sternly. "I just want to get to this fucking cabin already! Okay? So fuck off."
"We've been trying to get there for the past hour. Do you even know where it is?"
"Caleb I swear that if you say one more word. Another fucking word. I'm leaving you in the snow."
Caleb gives me a look and I signal him to back off. So he just shrugs it off and bites his tongue. Mary always makes fun of the way he only listens to me. But me and Caleb have a past, so I can't even tell her the real reason why.
The rest of the ride is silent again with Ashley and Jacob in the front of the SUV. Me, Caleb, Mary in the middle and Tyler in the far back. I watch us get father away from the road signs and Jacob's family cabin was really in the middle of nowhere. He veers the SUV to a pathway in the woods that seems way off course.
"Bro! Jacob are you sure you got the address right?" Tyler says breaking the uncomfortable silence. He's barely spoken the whole car ride which was unusual for him. He usually never knows when to shut up.
"Yes bro, I've been here every winter. Do you think I wouldn't know where my own family's cabin is?" Jacob spits out.
"Pssh whatever! My balls are going to freeze off."
"As if you'll ever have any use for them," Caleb says.
Tyler shoots us middle fingers from the back and Jacob parks the car right in front of the cabin. It's a nice cabin honestly; the walls are wooden, the door frames have delicate craftings on them, there's a rock way path that leads you to it and it seems cozy enough. Jacob's parents are on an another honeymoon this winter and they don't even know we're here. We all thought this would be a good place to spend our winter as seniors. We don't know the next time we'll see each other after we graduate.
"All right this is it guys! This is where we're going to spend the rest of our week."
"Not bad," Mary says. She lets Jacob open the door for her and does that bouncing thing as she walks. Everybody knows that she's into him especially Ashley. Ashley jokes about it but we all know she has secret resentment for her.
"Not bad," Ashley mimics. Causing Caleb to snicker and I follow right behind him. I'm always following him and I feel like I look like his pet. Where Caleb goes, I'm right behind him. That's how it's always been. I try to close the distance sometimes by walking beside him. But he always walks further so I can't catch up. It's his way of saying, 'don't cross the line'.
The cabin was beautiful from the inside. Everything seemed so welcoming and I really liked it.
"What the hell? There's literally no cell here," Ashley says.
"There is. It's just weak," he says. "I have some booze in the fridge! Why don't we get used to the cabin and play a game?"
I  nod and we all leave our stuff by the kitchen. Jacob grabs the alcohol from the fridge for us and lays it on the living room table. We sit in a circle. Jacob next to Ashley, Mary on his other side with me being sandwiched between Tyler and Caleb.
"Should we play truth or dare?" Tyler asks.
"Are we in middle school now?" Caleb says.
"Tyler is right... why don't we just play that at first? It's a simple game. Everybody knows it," I mention. I regret saying anything as soon as the words leave my mouth. I feel like whenever I talk everybody picks apart whatever I say. I've never been able to let go of this anxious feeling. Maybe my tone isn't right? Maybe the words I chose were off putting?
        "See! Lewis gets it!"
Tyler always seems to back me up.
"Fine! Whatever! How about this? If you don't want to do a truth, two shots. If you don't want to do a dare, five."
       "Five?"
"What? Are you a lightweight, Tyler? Can't handle your liquor?"
       "No! No..."
"Good. Then it's settled. Who wants to go first?"
Ashely speaks up first. "Mary. Truth or dare?"
      "Truth."
"Is it true that you lost your virginity in 7th grade?"
"Not really. I swear! Like it wasn't anything serious."
"That's actually insane. Like actually," Tyler says in shock. He's staring at us as if we didn't just hear what she said.
"Wow! You really were a whore from the get go," Ashley says with her snarky voice.
Caleb laughs. What's he laughing at? She isn't even that funny. Mary stares at Caleb with a hurt look on her face. I felt bad partially. The other part of me can't help the fact that I couldn't care less.
"Caleb. Truth or dare," Mary says with a sling voice. She stares at me for a second and that's when I knew. I knew she should shut the fuck up.
        "How about truth?"
        "Is it true..."
         "That?"
"That you and Lewis fucking hooked up!"

Shit. Shit. Shit.

There are two people you absolutely cannot piss off in our group. Caleb and Jacob. Jacob is more calm with his anger but it's scarier. Caleb? Caleb? He has some serious issues. He doesn't hide when he's angry and in rare cases he can get violent. Mary hasn't been in our group long enough for her to know the extent of his rage. Everyone else knew that though. When we all went silent, she probably thought it was from shock. But she couldn't be anymore wrong, we were all just scared of what Caleb might do.
"That's not even true first of all," he takes a deep breath and we're all just sitting there waiting for what he was going to say next. "Second of all, who the fuck even invited you? No one here even really likes you and Jacob probably only brought you because he feels bad. Everybody here feels bad for you. I'm sure you wanted everyone to gasp and be so shocked about the amazing news you had to share. But there's some news no one here would be shocked to know, that Mary Ellis is a desperate attention seeker who would do anything to have Jacob's dick."
"Yo! Caleb calm down," Tyler says. "It's just a game."
"I am calm? Do I seem angry to you? I'm just telling her what everyone was thinking," he says and takes one entire bottle of vodka. "I'm heading to my room. Also it's a do not enter for everyone but Lewis."
Mary is full of tears now and she yells out, "Yeah! OF COURSE IT IS!"
Caleb looks back as he's walking up the stairs, "Hey Mary. Shut the fuck up."
I look at everyone and especially at Jacob. His entire house warming game clearly did not end well. Tyler's trying to console Mary and Ashley is having her own conversation with Jacob. I feel awkward again and just head up to follow after Caleb. He's the only person here who has never made me afraid of speaking.
I open the door quietly and I see Caleb with glasses shards in between his knuckles. The window is already broken and there's blood on the cracks. I go up to him and he just hugs me.
"I really wanted to get rid of all of them. You know that right?" He whispers in my ear. Still holding me tight.
            "You should stop drinking..."
"Lewis? I'm not even drunk," he says but his words are slurred. "Did you see Jacob's face? All smug and shit. He likes it when people step all over my buttons. Fucking psychopath. I wish I could shoot him most of the time but other times he acts kinda chill so I rock with him."
I really don't think Caleb is the best person to call Jacob a psycho right now. "Look- Caleb. You said some pretty hurtful stuff and you should apologize later. But I get why you're upset. She probably just assumed that we hooked up because we're all secretive when we speak."
"Okay? But like who is she! I don't fucking know her! If it was Tyler or even Ashley, I would've laughed it off."
"But she didn't mean any harm! Seriously."
"It's the principle. It's the principle of the situation that makes me mad."
"Look at you with a new vocabulary," I tease him a bit. Just so he could laugh it off. He does and I'm glad. He just laughs in my arms and I know this is probably because he isn't sober. But I'm just glad to be holding him again . Even if it's just for a little while.
"GUYS!" Tyler busts into the door and Caleb looks like he's ready to knock him out. "Don't give me that look! Mary's gone! She was really drunk and she took off in the woods. We can't find her."
"It's only been a few minutes. How can you not find a drunk girl?" Caleb asks, pissed as fuck.
"I didn't realize until five minutes ago. Ashley and Jacob also went to go look for her. I think. But can you guys help? Please! What if the wolves got to her!"
                  "Fine. Let's search."
So we do. We venture in the woods and split off. It's starting to get late. I'm scared walking all alone in the woods and it just keeps on getting darker. Every branch snap scares me and I wish I had Caleb by my side. I smell something. It smells like blood. I walk over the bush and I see the most horrifying image.
Mary is dead on the floor with her neck purple as if she was strangled. A girl who was once so bright. She said she wanted to be a doctor. It was ironic how her own life needed saving right now. So I scream for help. Really loud. Unaware of the fact that the murderer could've been close. Or the fact that the murderer could've been one of the people coming for help.
