"HELP!"I'm hovering over her body and I can barely hear my own thoughts. My hands are shaking. The world seems to be pounding in sync with my heartbeat. I refrain from going closer to her lifeless body. Hoping that there's a sign of life. But there was none. I hear footsteps sinking in the snow. They get louder and I have this anxious feeling. I see Caleb first then followed by the rest of the group.
"What is it?" Caleb asks. I don't even have to answer because he looks down. He sees her body and he takes a few steps back.
"Caleb! What is it?" Ashley shoves him out of the way and he just lets her. She sees the body and screams. Tyler and Jacob get a closer look too. Tyler throws up and Jacob just stares blankly. Maybe he's in shock. Caleb looks at me. I think he's trying to figure out if I'm okay or not. I don't meet his eye contact. They're all screaming and crying. I'm waiting until they realize. That one of us is faking. That one of us did this. One of us killed Mary.
"What happened! What could have happened?" Ashley yells. She almost faints but Jacob catches her. She starts sobbing uncontrollably. "Why is she dead!"
They all turn their heads to Caleb. The suspicion is creeping through their lungs.
"Don't look at me like that. I didn't do it. I swear. I would've never!" Caleb looks at the group for reassurance. No reassurance was found. "I'm not a murderer! I'm not a killer. Do you think I would do this! You've known me for years."
Caleb walks closer to Tyler and he flinches. Caleb's eyes widen and he stares at me.
"I know you didn't do it Caleb," I say. But I'm not sure, he could've. "Let's just call the police and tell them? They know better than us."
"Right. Right. Cops! Someone call them," Jacob says and everybody just stares back at him. "Did you not hear me? Someone fucking call the cops."
Ashley pulls her phone out of her pocket. She raises her phone up. Trying to get some kind of service. She looks back at her phone shaking, "There's... no service."
There's silence followed by more silence. I look at Jacob hoping for a solution. "Okay. Let's just drive the station. We can explain everything. Also Ashley, take a picture for evidence."
"I don't want that on my phone Jacob!"
"Yeah. And I'm sure she wanted to die."
"No- I mean..."
He completely ignores her, "Let's head to the car." The walk back to the car was hard. We all had this heavy feeling in our chest. I look past the snow and I just see piles of it. The coldness can't compare to our hearts. Caleb looks the worst, his usual animatic face has turned into stone. He's kept his comments to himself as he walks slowly in the depths of the snow. His hands are in his pockets and I wonder if it's the same hands that he used to strangle Mary.
"Uh Jacob? Where's the car?" Tyler asks.
"I don't- know," he says. The car is gone. There's no tracks as if it was never there in the first place. Ashley falls to her knees, the strength she had must've disappeared.
"So what do we do now?"
"What else can we do but go back to the cabin?"The cabin doesn't seem so welcoming anymore. I don't feel warm here or safe. We're just standing right at the entrance.
"I think we should lock Caleb up," Ashley exclaims.
"I'm not some prisoner. It's not like I killed her!"
"Let's make this diplomatic. Raise your hand if you want the psychopath crazy Caleb to be locked up!" Ashley says. Tyler and Jacob raise their hands along with her. My arms are down. "So sorry Caleb but majority rules."
"Caleb... let's not make this difficult," Jacob says putting his hand on Caleb's shoulder. Caleb swats his hand off and rolls his eyes.
Caleb goes closer to me and whispers, "Look for evidence while they have me upstairs. I didn't kill her. You know me, if I did, I would've told you Lewis."
He turns to the group and says in a loud voice, "Fine! Whatever since you don't believe me, I'll be upstairs. If another one of you end up dead, don't come crying to me."
He stomps upstairs and shots the door to our room behind him. I stare at Tyler, Jacob and Ashley. I know it's not Caleb, he's crazy but he wouldn't do something like that. But I could say the same about everyone else in this cabin. All of their eyes turn to ones that belong to prey. How do I know they didn't all orchestrate this themselves? But why would they? I walk to the kitchen and grab a beer.
"Alcohol? Really Lewis? You don't even drink," Jacob says.
"What am I supposed to do then? It's as if you haven't processed the fact that the girl we were with two hours ago was dead! Get it in your skull. She's dead. She isn't coming back. Not only is she dead, she was murdered!"
"We're all emotional. I get it. But we weren't even that close anyways," he says as he takes the drink from my hand, laying it on the kitchen counter. "She might've strangled herself for attention. We know how desperate she is."
"Jacob! Sympathy!" Ashley yells at him.
"Oh my God, Ashley," Jacob grabs the beer bottle from the counter and clings it on the edge. "SHUT!" Crack. "UP!" Crack. The bottle breaks. The top of it still in his hands but it's just left with sharp edges.
Ashely backs up to the living room, "Jacob- you're scaring me!"
"You think I want to be stuck here? With you? Truth is- I don't know how long it'll be until the police finds us. It could be tomorrow or even in a month. I don't know. We're miles away from the city and we didn't tell anyone about this."
Ashley starts bawling again. She isn't an emotional person except for when she's stressed. Jacob comes in to hug her but she pulls away.
"I'm sorry Ashley- I didn't mean it," he says. "I was just stressed." He puts his fingers through her hair. She's falling for his trap again. I know exactly how she feels because their dynamic and mine with Caleb are eerily similar. I let them have their time and I just see Tyler on the corner of the couch. Staring at absolutely nothing. I give him his time to process things and wander around the cabin.
There was no family photo or anything that made it seem lived in. I look through the cabinets and fridges that are filled with food but it's all recently bought. Some aren't even opened. I go through the drawers and basically nothing. I wanted to go outside to explore more but I was afraid that there was something out there. The cabin wasn't safe but it felt safer than the unknown. I look by the fireplace where I find a photo. It was of Jacob but way younger. It's an odd place to keep a photo. I feel like I needed to see all there was to offer so I head upstairs.
I open the door to me and Caleb's bedroom. He was staring at the wall but then his gaze drifted to me. Looking me up and down. Caleb was undoubtedly handsome, he had dark auburn hair. His eyes were a dark brown but there's a ring in of them that are of a lighter shade. He was fit because he used to go to fight clubs back in junior year. Whenever he looks at me, I feel an electric shock go through my spine. It's hard to remind myself of just how dangerous he really is.
"Found anything new?" He says.
"No, sadly. It just seemed a bit weird here. How are there no family photos here?"
"Tell me more," he says like he's genuinely interested. He pats his bed. I lay right beside him and curl in a ball. He grabs my waist and holds me in closer. My hands rest on his chest and he's basically spooning me. Our height difference isn't too crazy but it is noticeable at times like this. "Not going to lie Lewis. You're making me really horny."
I glare at him, "Do you want to hear what I have to say or not?"
"Sure."
"There were no family photos here even though his parents owns the cabin. They come here every winter, every Christmas almost. They're back from their honeymoon right before Christmas. So the entire family could spend the rest of winter here."
He's mumbling because his chin is rested on top of my head. "Mmm, your point is?"
"Isn't it weird for there to be no Christmas tree here? Or any left over decorations?"
"Yeah. But they could've cleared it out before they had to leave?"
"Can that explain why there's no family photos? Or anything that shows signs of use? What if... this isn't their cabin?"
"You're so smart Lewis," he says and combs his finger through my hair just like how Jacob does to Ashley. I don't question his affection and lean into it.
"That's why you're so obsessed," I tease then get up. That follows with a groan coming from Caleb. I open the door and I see Jacob looking right down at me. His eyes look sunken and terrifying. How long has he been standing in front of the door? His stare is so intense and he doesn't move. Not a single muscle. I brush past him and his eyes still don't move away. I walk down the stairs really fast. I look back up to see if he's still standing there but my door is closed. He went in my room. He's in my room. He's in my room with Caleb.
Tyler looks like he just finished a conversation with Ashley. "Lewis where have you been?"
"In my room."
"With Caleb?"
"Yes. We were just talking. How are you?"
"I'm doing okay. Just okay. I've never seen a dead body before but in shows. It was so weird like one minute she was here smiling. Now she's dead! Gone forever and we don't even know why! That's so- so sad."
"Yeah... Tyler, it is sad. Maybe a hunter got her. We don't know yet. But we should find a way to contact someone as soon as possible."
Tyler nods in agreement but Ashley just had the most blank look on her face. Like she wasn't presently here with us. I was about to ask her a question but then I heard a thud coming from upstairs. We all rush to check what's going on. We open the door till it clangs and we see Jacob punching Caleb in the face. Just before any of us could intervene we heard noises from outside.
"We're not alone," Caleb says. Jacob gets off him and looks through the window.
"What do you mean?"
We all go silent.
"We're not the only people here."
