The walk back to the cabin is tough and the cold isn't even the worst part. The heavy feeling in my heart that won't seem to go away no matter how hard I try to forget what Jacob did. My friend Jacob killed someone and I'm unsure of how far he can go. It's making me question everything even myself. I open the cabin door and I can already hear yelling coming from inside.
"Jacob! What the fuck! Why would you do that?"
"He was going to kill Lewis! What was I supposed to do?" He yells back at Ashley. He notices me walk in and then turns back to her. "If I just stood there and watched, he wouldn't be here right now."
"I'm starting to think you care more about him than everyone else here! Did you think of how this would affect me? That's it. I'm not going to date a murderer. As soon as we get out of here, don't call me don't text. I want zero contact with you."
He takes a minute to respond. "I don't care. Lewis is still on my side and I don't need you."
"Lewis? You're on the side of a murderer?"
I don't know how to respond and I know for a fact that my answer will change the entire dynamic of the group. "I don't know what to say right now. Where's Caleb and Trevor?"
"I'm not sure where Trevor went but Caleb is in his room. Probably waiting for you," he answers.
Ashley doesn't even look at me and I know I've ruined our friendship already. My diplomatic answer obviously did not please her and she most likely thinks me and Jacob are the same. She couldn't be more wrong. I try to ignore her glare as I'm walking up the stairs. I'm not sure if I made the right decision by not backing her completely but there's nothing I can do about it now.
I knock on our room door, without waiting for an answer I just walk in. I see Caleb just sitting on the edge of the bed. He looks furious, it's like I'm standing next to a storm.
"Don't listen to Jacob, he was just trying to make you mad."
"What makes you think he could get to my head? That asshole is just annoying."
"I mean, why else would you walk off like that? If he wasn't getting to your head..."
"That bastard touched you. You're totally off limits for him and he disrespected that."
"Are you kidding me? Jacob killed someone and the thing you're upset about is the fact he touched my forehead?"
"Because you belong to me! Not him and not anyone else in the cabin. He made the awful claim that I wouldn't kill for you but I would Lewis," he brings me in by the waist. "If you asked me to get rid of Trevor or Ashley. I would kill them right now. I don't care if he thinks otherwise, I just want you to understand that. I want you to understand the lengths I would go to protect you."
"Don't say that."
"Why? It's the truth? I've killed for you before and I would do it again."
"-Did you kill Mary?"
"Your dad. I killed your dad, did you forget about that already?"
I did. I did forget about that. Last winter, he found out about my dad's abuse because he came over too early. We were supposed to watch one of Jacob's football games and he was my ride. I told him to come at four but he came at two as a surprise. He ended up witnessing something I've been hiding for a very long time. My dad saw that Caleb came in and caught him in the act. So he grabbed a wine bottle and smashed it on Caleb's head. I was able to run up the stairs with Caleb so we could hide but my dad chased after us. Caleb already mad, pushed my dad down the stairs which split his head open. Jacob came over after the game to help us clean it up. We pinky promised never to tell anyone what happened that day. Even though they both hated each other, we were all bonded by the dark secret we had to keep.
"I'm sorry that you had to do that for me but that doesn't mean I excuse you and Jacob's behavior. People's lives aren't something you can control over your obsession with someone. Okay?"
"Okay. Whatever," he says and turns away from me. "Just go back downstairs and be with Jacob. I'm done with this conversation."
"You're acting like a child."
"Am I not allowed to be jealous anymore?"
There's no point in having any further of a conversation with Caleb. He doesn't actually like me but he likes toying with my emotions and so does Jacob. I walk out of the room and go downstairs. Ashley's sitting on the coach and Jacob is on the kitchen counter. Both of them still not speaking a word to each other.
"Where's Tyler?"
"No clue. He said he's trying to get some phone signal so he went out to the woods," Ashley says plainly.
"You let him go by himself?" My voice rises. She looks at me and just shrugs. Not giving me an explanation on what on earth made her think it was a good idea for Trevor to go out in the woods. Especially when we now know we aren't here alone.
I go out of the front door in a hurry. "TYLER!" There isn't any answer. I walk further in the woods and the air smells like death. "Tyler!" Still no answer. I'm thinking about just going back to the cabin, maybe he's already back by now. Suddenly I hear a tree branch crack and Trevor jumps up from behind me.
"Boo!"
"Not funny man. I was seriously worried. Were you able to get any signal?"
His face frowns a bit, "Yeah I did but they won't be able to come until tomorrow morning. The snow is too deep for the wheels."
"Have you told the others?"
"...No. I don't want to. One of them could be the murder and all the detectives movies I've been binging helped me realize that giving a murder a time limit is NOT a good idea."
"Yeah you're right. Smart thinking. But why'd you tell me? What if I was the murderer?"
"I know you would never do something like that Lewis. Just isn't who you are."
"What about the rest?"
"I can really never figure out what's going on in their heads. But at least when I talk to you, I never have to look for the meaning behind your words. Or try to read behind the lines."
I was glad he thought that about me. Tyler's always been my favorite because he wears his heart on his sleeve. "I could say the same about you Ty. I hope you never change."
"I believe that's enough said. Why don't we go back to the cabin bro?"
Tyler opens the cabin door first and everyone else was already sitting in the living room. It's so silent and it's unusual because those three always have the most to say.
"What's going on?"
"We're deciding on how to punish Jacob. Ashley says it should be an executive meeting. She was just trying to be fancy or whatever."
"I'm trying to be a business woman Caleb. We were just talking about the best way to wash away Jacob's sin. Which was murder."
"It was protection," Jacob mumbles.
"So, me and Ashley decided that we should disable him. By shooting his hand off," Caleb mimics the sound of a gun. "For the crimes of dishonesty, murder and probably more atrocious acts."
I look at Ashley and Caleb as if they were strangers. Did being out here really fuck them up that much? That they want to play God? "I don't think it's a fair punishment! Are you guys hearing yourselves? I thought we all agreed we'd wait until the police come for us."
"Yeah? And when will that happen?" Ashley questions. She's obviously trying to make me question my ethics on the whole thing. Like she's trying to imply that it's situational.
I want to tell them that Trevor got that sorted out. That well just have to deal with this till morning but then I remembered what he said about the murderer. We don't know how many people were involved in Ashley's death so I can't rely on us just outnumbering the culprit.
As usual, Tyler chimes in to defend me. "That doesn't mean we should permanently disable someone!"
"Why is everyone except me and Caleb on Jacob's side now? Are we the only sane people here?"
"Probably because they don't know."
"Don't know what?" I ask loudly.
"Go on Jacob, tell them. Tell them about this cabin Jacob."
"This isn't the winter cabin."
"Say it louder!" Caleb yells in his ear.
"THIS ISN'T THE FUCKING WINTER CABIN!"
Trevor's mouth practically drops to the floor. He's screaming in his hands filled with rage. He's definitely not on Jacob's side now. "What the FUCK! What the FUCK is wrong with you?"
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I just wanted us to do something fun for winter and I didn't want my parents to catch us..."
"Why didn't you tell us that earlier? Did you just send us here to kill all of us off! Mary's DEAD! She's DEAD JACOB! And no one's going to come to help us because no one knows where we are."
He's running up and down and I see him walk off somewhere in a fit. I turn to Jacob and he's crying. He's wiping his tears with the back of his hand. He didn't even cry when he saw the body. "I didn't know! I didn't know she'd die. If I knew this was going to happen, I wouldn't have planned to go out here!"
I'm trying to look for ways to diffuse the situation. It's all a mess and everybody is mad or upset. Tyler comes back with the gun in his hand. "Jacob didn't mean for this to happen! We're all just stressed out right now..."
"You're still defending him? Are you in love with him or something?" Ashley asks in an ugly tone. Now Caleb's pissed off even more. He doesn't say anything though probably because he thinks the same.
"No I don't like him that way Ashley! You don't have to be in love in order to be reasonable."
Ashley is about to argue back at me- BANG! We're all turning our heads to see Jacob's left hand with a bullet hole in the middle of it. The scream that follows the gunshot is the most terrifying experience. The scream is like a rippling effect that makes everything seem so real. It was as if this was the moment everybody realized what they had become. Jacob, someone who jokes around and can be a proper jerk, is now screaming in agony. He's looking at us and the blood drenches the green carpet he's now kneeling over.
"Tyler..." I say.
Tyler still has the gun in his hand and he's breathing heavily. His fingers are shaky and he can't hold the gun for any longer. It drops to the floor and he falls over just to cry. Tyler has officially changed, he's not the same Tyler that I was in the car with.
"Tyler... what have you done?"
"I don't know. I don't know."
Ashley is officially pissing me off, she was the one who suggested the idea and now she's looking at Tyler like he's a monster. Caleb gets off from his seat and walks over to me.
"I'm sorry that you had to see that Lewis. Go back upstairs and sleep it off. We can deal with this, okay?" He says in the gentle voice that he only has when we're alone. I guess he's stopped caring about our other friends after everything that's been happening. I just walk upstairs and I can still hear Jacob's screams no matter how hard I try to sleep.
Sleeping is too hard for me right now. I decide to explore the cabin more. I walk down the hallway and I notice something weird on the wall. I reach up to open it. It reveals a ladder that was placed down. How have I never realized there was an attic? I walk up the ladder, bracing for whatever secrets left that this cabin had to offer. There isn't anything here but a mini fridge. I open the fridge and there's a diary in there. There's also meat.
I open the container with meat and it smells awful. It's chopped up in a weird way. I try to disregard that for now. I take a look at the diary and there isn't anything written on it. It's a weird place to keep a diary. I hear footsteps walking up the ladder. Creakkkkk. I turn around and I see Caleb.
"What are you doing here?"
I quickly hide the diary behind my back. "Nothing. I couldn't sleep. You already knew this place was here?"
"Yeah duh. Everybody did. I checked it out the first time I stormed up to my room. Let's go back to bed."
"Was there anything in the fridge back then?"
"No. It was completely empty."
That means... that this wasn't spoilt meat. Someone's been up here recently. And that isn't meat. I try to hide the grossed out expression on my face and just take his hand. I don't know how I'll sleep with this knowledge. Nothings adding up.
