Chapter 24: A New Pet

Y/N's P.O.V

Tara and I are in the office with the vet.

He's looking the pup over on the table. 

Vet: So, you found him in a cardboard box in an alleyway?

Y/N: Yeah, he was pretty wet, but he seemed to be okay. Is he though?

Vet: Well, he does seem perfect healthy. I can't seen anything. It's a good thing you found him when you did.

Tara: Do you think you can find a home for him?

Vet: I think so. I...

Just then we hear a bang outside, causing the pup to jump up and run over to me.

I pick him up and feel him shake.

That bang outside definitely scared him.

Y/N: Hey, hey. It's okay. I got you.

The vet smiles.

Y/N: What?

Vet: Well, it seems this pup has developed a strong connection to you.

Y/N: Really?

Vet: Yes. It seems that he sees you as his care taker.

Tara: That makes sense. I mean you're the one who found him.

Y/N: Yeah, I guess so.

I look at the pup.

Y/N: I guess you're coming home with me, pal.

Tara: Well, he's gonna need a name, babe.

Y/N: Hmm.

I think of a name and come up with one.

Y/N: Okay, I got one.

Vet: Okay then. If you go into the next room you can by a collar and ingrave a tag with his name and any additional information.

Y/N: Great. Thank you.

I shake hands with him.

After that Tara and I leave the room.

Tara: So, what's his name gonna be?

I smile.

Y/N: You'll find out.

(Fifteen minutes later)

I've just bought the pup a collar and we're getting tags ingraved for him now.

Once it's done, I grab the tags and hook them onto the collar.

I go over to Tara, who's holding him.

Y/N: Here we go.

Tara: So, what's his name?

Y/N: Take a look.

I show her the tags with his name. Shadow.

Tara: Shadow? Why Shadow?

Y/N: Well, he's a Golden Retriver and one of my favourite movies as a kid, was Homeward Bound.

Tara: Homeward Bound?

Y/N: Yeah, you remember. The two dogs and the cat. One of them was a Golden Retriver.

She nods.

Tara: Oh, yeah. And his name was Shadow.

Y/N: Yeah, exactly.

Tara: Aw. That name does suit him.

I put the collar on Shadow and take him from Tara.

Y/N: Welcome to the family, Shadow.

He licks my face and barks.

Y/N: Okay... now, I need get other things he needs. Food bowl, water bowl that sorta thing.

Tara: Yeah, okay.

We then leave to go get what Shadow needs.

(Thirty minutes later)

Tara and I are now in a pet store getting what I need for Shadow.

I have Shadow in the cart as I place stuff in it.

Y/N: Okay. Got food, bowls, a lead, crap bags. What else do I need?

Just then I see Tara coming over.

Y/N: Hey, where'd you go?

Tara: I found something that'll look great on Shadow. Now, I know he has a collar, but he'll look adorable in this.

She shows me a red bandana.

I chuckle.

Y/N: Really?

Tara: Yes. Let's get it for him, please.

I sigh.

Y/N: Okay, fine.

After that we go to pay for everything.

We then leave the store I put Shadow down and attach the lead to his collar.

Tara kneels down with the bandana and puts it on around Shadow's neck.

Tara: See? He looks adorable.

I smile.

Y/N: Yeah, he does.

I stand and lead Shadow on the lead.

Y/N: Come on, boy.

He immediately follows us.

(One hour later)

Tara and I are now back at my place.

We're laying in bed with Shadow and watching Homeward Bound.

Y/N: I forget how much I loved this movie.

Tara: Me too. I can't believe I forgot about this movie.

Y/N: I know, right?

Just then her phone goes off.

She looks at her phone and sighs.

Y/N: Who is it?

Tara: Sam, again.

She answers it and I pause the movie.

Tara: Hey, Sam. Yes, I'm fine. Just like I was when you called an hour ago. I'm still with Y/N. We're in his room. Yeah, okay. Bye, Sam.

Sha hangs up.

Tara: Sam is really getting on my nerves.

Y/N: You know she only does it because she cares.

She nods.

Tara: I know, I know.

I play the movie again and we continue to watch it.

Shadow comes up and cuddles up on my lap.

I'm glad I chose to take in Shadow.
