oh, baby!

"So, Chaewon, is there anyone special in your life?"

Yunjin nearly chokes on her mouthful of food as the seemingly-innocent question comes out of her mother's mouth. Her family is having Chaewon over for Christmas dinner, same as every year, since Chaewon's parents travel for work for months at a time and she's usually alone for the holidays. However, this is their first Christmas together since Chaewon and Yunjin started secretly dating, and Yunjin's been unnecessarily on edge the whole time. Her parents certainly do not help.

"Mom, don't pry," she admonishes, once she safely swallows her food.

Chaewon just laughs graciously. She looks absolutely angelic, in a white cotton maxidress borrowed from Yunjin and a matching ribbon in her hair. "It's alright, Yunjinie," she smiles. "And actually, the answer is yes. Although that's all I'm willing to reveal." She sends a discreet wink in Yunjin's direction, and Yunjin's heart flutters in response.

"Ooh!" Yunjin's mom squeals in excitement. "That's just wonderful! I just knew it - such a pretty girl. And it's not prying ," she says pointedly to Yunjin. "I'm just wondering, since my own daughter won't tell me anything about her love life."

"Mom," Yunjin groans, her stomach twisting uncomfortably as it always does when the topic is broached. "For the millionth time, there's nothing to tell, okay?"

Yunjin's dad looks up from his plate long enough to remark, "she's right, honey, stop hounding the poor girl."

"Alright, alright," Yunjin's mom says, throwing her hands up in defeat. "I'll just grow old and gray and abandon my dreams of having grandchildren."

"Well, if it makes you feel better, I don't think my own parents are having any grandkids soon either," Chaewon laughs. "Although I would look great pregnant, right?"

She says this last part jokingly with another subtle wink towards Yunjin, and although the conversation continues to flow naturally, Yunjin's unable to really focus. The passive aggressive jab from her mom kinda threw her off, and she can't seem to get back on balance. She already feels nervous enough hiding her sexuality from her parents without the added stress of her secret girlfriend sitting right across the table.

Chaewon must sense her discomfort, because after everyone's finished eating, she says, "Mr. and Mrs. Huh, would you mind if Yunjin and I went over to my house? My folks got me this new game for Christmas that I wanna play."

"Oh, of course!" Yunjin's mom says. "There'll be dessert here too, if you want to come back over."

Chaewon says her goodbyes and she and Yunjin take their leave, cutting through the fence and into Chaewon's backyard. Once they're out of sight, Yunjin takes Chaewon's hand in hers, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.

"Thanks for getting us out of there," Yunjin sighs as they enter the house. "God, I know it's not their fault, but everything is just so damn stressful with them."

"I know, baby," Chaewon says sympathetically, steering Yunjin into the kitchen. "Here, you can just relax now."

She sits Yunjin down at the kitchen counter and pulls a bottle of chilled champagne out of her parents' massive alcohol fridge. Expertly, she unscrews the cork without any spillage and pours a tall glass for each of them. "Merry Christmas," she smiles, holding her glass up, and Yunjin clinks it gratefully with her own before taking a sip. It tastes delicious, nothing like the gross church wine Yunjin's used to, and she pretty much drains the glass in one go.

"Seems like you needed that," Chaewon giggles, refilling her glass to the top. "Thank you for enduring that for me, Yunjinie. You know I appreciate it."
