My first experience with the Netflix series 'Bridgerton' was walking in on my friends watching Daphne's confusion when having a 19th century sex talk with her mother. She was barely through learning about the birds and the bees before she was whisked off to her wedding night. I remember thinking as the story progressed, and we saw the kind of distress Daphne went through simply because she did not have all the facts, that I loved what this series was doing in talking about the detrimental effect of poor sex education.
A bit of feminism and snazzy costumes? Count me in!
Then after having my proverbial socks knocked off me by the second season, I thought why not delve into the original source material and see what that was like.
Well. To say I was disappointed was a bit of an understatement. It had some good smut, don't get me wrong. The dynamics between the Bridgerton siblings were pretty much always *chef's kiss*, just like in the show. But the rampant chauvinsim, sexism and genuine abuse was just so off-putting. And I don't care if they were written that way because Julia Quinn was in the middle of the weird, naughties GRL PWR faux-feminism era when writing, or that it was meant to be accurate of its setting. No. This was more than that and I did NOT care for it.
So I have decided to change it. The three books I have real problems with are Eloise's, Penelope's and Benedict's. I will be rewriting them in this order and will edit/add bits that I think are either more in keeping with their characters or are just a lot less gross than the original. I think I will aim to keep with the personalities as portrayed in the Netflix series, just because that was how I was introduced to them. Like with Marina's kids not actually being from her marriage to Phillip, but from her relationship with his brother.
It will likely not be updated regularly because I am a messy human being, with a messy life. I would appreciate any and all constructive criticism, just please remember I am not writing this to please anyone - it is just for funsies and due to my own personal issues with the OG material.
