As they strolled along the dimly lit streets, Jiwon broke the silence with a heartfelt expression of gratitude. "Thanks for the dinner!" she exclaimed, her voice warm with appreciation.
Taehyung smiled in response, his heart swelling with gratitude. "It's my pleasure, after all. You've always helped me a lot," he replied sincerely.
But Jiwon's next words caught Taehyung off guard. "Oh, so the dinner is only for thanking me? I thought..." she trailed off, a hint of uncertainty in her voice.
Taehyung's curiosity piqued, prompting him to inquire further. "You thought what?" he asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.
Jiwon hesitated for a moment before finally admitting, "I thought you'd ask me out on a date."
Taehyung's eyes widened in shock, his cheeks flushing crimson with embarrassment. He stuttered, unable to formulate a coherent response. Meanwhile, Jungkook stood by, equally stunned by the unexpected turn of events.
"How could I? I am not capable of asking you out," Taehyung finally managed to stammer, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jiwon's expression softened, her eyes filled with understanding. "Why? You don't like me? I thought you do! I like you though, even if you don't like me. But it's okay, your choice!" she reassured him, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
Taehyung was at a loss for words, his mind reeling from the revelation. He couldn't believe that someone as kind and beautiful as Jiwon would have feelings for him. And yet, there she stood, confessing her affection with genuine sincerity.
As Taehyung struggled to process the moment, Jungkook felt a pang in his heart. Despite the ache of unrequited love, he couldn't help but smile at the sight of Taehyung's flustered reaction. For in that moment, he realized that Taehyung's happiness mattered more to him than anything else in the world.
Taehyung's heart fluttered at Jiwon's confession, his cheeks still flushed with embarrassment. "You like me?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jiwon nodded, her eyes shimmering with sincerity. "Yes, I like you. I've liked you from the very beginning, ever since you joined our cafe," she confessed softly. "How couldn't anybody like an angel like you?"
Her words struck a chord with Taehyung, filling him with a mixture of joy and disbelief. But as he glanced at Jungkook, he couldn't help but notice the subtle shift in Jiwon's demeanor. The last line, uttered with a fleeting glance in Jungkook's direction, seemed to carry a hint of mockery.
Taehyung's heart sank at the realization that Jiwon's words may have been intended to slight Jungkook. He felt a pang of guilt for inadvertently causing tension between them, even as he struggled to navigate his own feelings.
Unable to ignore the awkwardness of the moment, Taehyung forced a smile and muttered a quiet thank you to Jiwon. But deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air, knowing that his happiness had come at the expense of someone else's pain.
Taehyung's heart constricted as Jiwon's words washed over him, her earnestness cutting through his defenses. He struggled to find the right words to respond, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.
"Actually, I do have a crush on you," Taehyung admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm not suitable for you. You deserve better than me."
The weight of his own insecurities bore down on Taehyung, threatening to drown him in self-doubt. But Jiwon's next words stopped him short, her gaze unwavering as she addressed his concerns head-on.
"Is it because of money?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern. "Do you think I'll leave you because you don't earn a lot of money? I know you're still in university, and I'm five years older than you. It may seem inappropriate, but love is love, right?"
Taehyung listened in stunned silence as Jiwon continued to speak, her words resonating deep within his soul. She reassured him that she was in no hurry to receive his answer, and that she would never give up on him, no matter the obstacles they faced.
As Taehyung processed Jiwon's heartfelt confession, he couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by a sense of unworthiness. Did he truly deserve someone as kind, caring, and resilient as Jiwon? He had never felt deserving of love or happiness, always believing himself to be the lesser sibling, the perpetual disappointment.
But as he looked into Jiwon's eyes, Taehyung saw a glimmer of hope flicker to life within him. Perhaps, just perhaps, he was worthy of love after all. And with that newfound sense of possibility, Taehyung made a silent vow to himself – to overcome his insecurities and embrace the love that Jiwon offered him, no matter the challenges that lay ahead.
As Taehyung grappled with his inner turmoil, his thoughts swirled with painful memories of his past. He couldn't shake the feeling of inadequacy that had plagued him since childhood – the constant comparisons to his brother, the lack of praise or recognition, the sense of always falling short.
From a young age, Taehyung had been overshadowed by his brother, relegated to the sidelines while his sibling received the lion's share of attention and affection. Whether it was in the form of toys, clothes, or even academic achievements, Taehyung always felt like he came up short.
His mother's preference for his brother only deepened his feelings of worthlessness, leaving Taehyung to question his own value and place in the world. He had grown accustomed to being labeled a "loser," to feeling like he didn't deserve the best that life had to offer.
But as he stood on the precipice of a new chapter in his life, Taehyung couldn't help but wonder – did he truly deserve to be happy? Did he deserve someone as kind, caring, and supportive as Jiwon?
The answer eluded him, buried beneath layers of self-doubt and insecurity. But deep down, Taehyung knew that he couldn't let his past define his future. He owed it to himself – and to Jiwon – to break free from the shackles of his own insecurities and embrace the possibility of happiness, no matter how daunting it may seem.
